Karen Hughes getting "da bidness" from Turk women

I guess this is what happens when you comprise an audience of people that you didn't pre-screen, hand select or give/accepts donations to/from. No wonder GWB is so careful as to not let anyone within a mile of him if they disagree. He wouldn't have to actually answer any questions that aren't scripted.

I personally liked the last line.

Turkish women confront Hughes

Thursday, September 29, 2005
By Glenn Kessler, The Washington Post

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- A group of Turkish female activists confronted Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes yesterday with heated complaints about the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, turning a session designed to highlight the empowerment of women into a raw display of anger at U.S. policy in the region.

"This war is really, really bringing your positive efforts to the level of zero," said Hidayet Sefkatli Tuksal, an activist with the Capital City Women's Forum. She said it was difficult to talk about cooperation between women in the United States and Turkey as long as Iraq was under occupation.

Hughes, a longtime confidant of President Bush with the job of burnishing the U.S. image overseas, has generally met with polite audiences -- many of whom received U.S. funding or consisted of former exchange students -- during a tour of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey this week.

In this case, the U.S. Embassy asked Kader, an umbrella group that supports woman candidates, to assemble the guest list. None of the activists receive U.S. funds and the guests apparently had little desire to mince words. Six of the eight women who spoke at the session, held in Ankara, the capital, focused on the Iraq war.

"War makes the rights of women completely erased and poverty comes after war -- and women pay the price," said Fatma Nevin Vargun, a Kurdish women's rights activist. Vargun denounced the arrest of Cindy Sheehan, the activist mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, in front of the White House on Monday at an antiwar protest.

Hughes, looking increasingly pained, defended the decision to invade Iraq as a difficult and wrenching moment for Bush, but necessary to protect America.

"You're concerned about war, and no one likes war," she said. But "to preserve the peace sometimes my country believes war is necessary." She also asserted that women are faring much better in Iraq than under the rule of deposed Saddam Hussein.

"War is not necessary for peace," shot back Feray Salman, a human rights advocate. She said countries should not try to impose democracy through war.

We weren't imposing democracy so much as insuring the free flow of oil. Shouldn't they be thankful we just didn't wipe them out?

Yeah...she's on her "listening" tour but seems to be doing a lot of holier-than-thou preaching.

Dumb b*tch. She's worthless and should have stayed home instead of coming back to salvage the miserable failure taking up residence in the White House.

You really have to wonder how a housewife from Texas is qualified to handle the job of improving our relations with the Muslims in the world.
Then I look at Brownie and his qualifications.
Then I look at Bush and his qualifications.
And I realize Hughes is vastly more qualified then the average appointee in this administration.

I hear Hughes was "politely" received in Saudi Arabia, but was basically told to keep most of her ideas to herself until she knows something about the people she's talking to.

It's Istanbul, not Constantinople; that's nobody's business but the Turks'...

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Is Hughs really a woman? She looks like a gym teacher. We need to find an actual woman that looks like a woman and has a heart.

People like Conjur and other extremists are upset about Karen Hughes?

That only means she is a great lady and should be looked up to!

We should have a parade for her!

I have always loved her, almost as much as I love Hillary!

"Difficult and wrenching moment for Bush"

Close to the funniest thing I've ever read. LOL😀

Many of us are upset with Ms. Hughes because we believe that the term "Ugly American" shouldn't be a qualification for a job in Federal government!

""Many people around the world do not understand the important role that faith plays in Americans' lives," she said. When an Egyptian opposition leader inquired why Mr Bush mentions God in his speeches, Hughes asked him whether he was aware that "previous American presidents have also cited God, and that our constitution cites 'one nation under God'."" (thnxs DailyKos)

On another note in the same venue dealing with the same person. Maybe someone can dig up a copy of the Constitution for her to read.

I suppose the Guardian article author couldn't bring himself to mention that OBL has demanded that we all convert to Islam? Refresh my memory whether or not Bush has told all the "infidels" in the ME that they must convert to Christianity, or die?

iow, this argument about Bush's supposed lectures about God seems very myopic and one-sided. Not to mention that the ME seems to take a "Do as I say but not as I do." sort of stance concerning the whole religion thing.

DailyKos and the Guardian disapprove of Karen Hughes?

My opinion of Karen Hughes goes higher by the minute.

Karen Hughes for President!

there was a picture in the newspaper(maybe someone has a link) of Hughes handing out a book about the history of American Presidents. The cover had 4 big pictures. Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy and some joker named George W. Bush.
