Hey guys, life has me so busy over the past five years I have not been able to keep up with the trends in the mobo processor market. My phenom II 550 black and mobo are locking up randomly and it is about time to purchase a cheap replacement. I don't have the time for shipping and will be going to the local Fry's. Under $300 what is the best bang for the buck for a processor/motherboard combo? Overclocking is not problem. As I do mostly multi-tasking between 10 apps at a time and don't play games more cores is preferred.

Much appreciated!

The 6400 is slow and useless. The 6500 is an absolute minimum. As both are locked you want the fastest clock speed out of the box. I'd also pick DDR3 or DDR4. I wouldn't trust any board that claims to run both flawlessly. As its been 5yrs you may as well spring for H170 and get a mobo that will last:

Burpo's RAM is OK. $350 in total gets you a more flexible chipset with a better sound codec and more expansion options plus that i5 is 500MHz faster base speed vs the poky 6400.

lol, I edited my post before you answered, because I found the 6500 for $10 more, so it still fit his budget..
