Kanye is nothing more than a mediocre lyricist, and never will be. His flows suck, he mumbles too much, his voice sucks, and he thinks he's clever and sarcastic when he's just plain corny. "Through the Wire" had a sick beat, but Kanye's lyrics sucked it up... cmon, this guy is TALKING for half the g.dam song, and there's no hook except a sped up Chaka looped. Anyone can talk on a song (like we should feel sorry for him b/c he fell asleep behind the wheel), and anyone can loop an 80's song, speed it up, and use it as the hook...

On the other hand, Kanye as a producer is incredible... Out of all of his beats, I maybe don't like two (out of around 35 songs)... He is sort of like Diddy, exceptional sampling and beats, but should have NEVER picked up the mike... Everyone wants to be like Dr.Dre, yet nobody can touch the Bo Jackson of hip hop (rapping and sick producing). But it was a nice try Kanye. lol

I definitely agree with what you said, but sick beats, in hip hop especially, are enough to make a hit. And I'm guilty of liking his songs, despite knowing that he's not all that great lyrically.

A friend of mine put it simply - where does Kanye go from here? "College Dropout" touched on practically all that topics he seems capable of writing out (his accident, dropping out of college and Jesus, repeated in practically all his songs). I can't see him having a 2nd album that's any good.

Like you said, sick beats are enough... look at DJ Premier, Swizz Beats, Just Blaze, Neptunes, etc... I think anything Kanye produces will be pretty good just b/c of his incredible beats, but yes I don't think he can match his first album. I think he should keep the rapping to a minimum and concentrate more on producing, then get some heavy hitters to rap on his next album... On the issue of what he allegedly said, I doubt he "saved" hiphop. Jay-Z's Black Album was just as good or better than Kanye, as well as Outkast's. Funny how you can go from the humility of being lucky to be alive, to "everyone owes me something" attitude.

what else can we expect from a teddy bear loving "college dropout"...

beit the cocky guy his may be, that album rocked!

"I saved hip hop, I'm on the radio, ya'll should be thanking me! I'm the first one to use soul samples in records, ya'll don't know that?"

Umm... ok... Not even remotely close to the first one to use soul samples in records, jackass... Used to kinda halfway respect this guy until he made that statement... What a douche.

Moron.
and a millionaire

i wouldnt mind being a moron and rich off my @$$
Well, you're half way there already!

j/k couldn't resist saying it 😉

I can't say I'm surprised by any of this. 90% of musicians in general have overly large egos with 99% of rappers in specific. That genera has no appeal to me, so I guess I'll continue to avoid it.

exactly.

Doesn't Jay-Z call himself Ja-Hova ? That's got to be some of the cockiest shiz I ever heard.

^ he isn't jay-z anymore.... in '99 problems', shawn carter aka. jay-z kills off his jay-z persona by having him die in a hail of gunfire. he is now resurrecting himself as just 'shawn carter'.

::cough:: been done jay-z... 2pac getting shot and killed in 'toss it up' and then coming back as makaveli..then look what happened to him... ::/cough::

either way....he basically called himself the name that a large group of people use to named God.

Pretty lame IMHO.

He's been a hitmaker in the industry since the late 90's. In fact he's been a primary factor in Jay Z's most successful albums. (I still don't know if thats a good thing or not)

Obviously Kanye is cocky but truthfully he is currently bridging quality hiphop artsts (Mos Def, Common, Kweli) over to a mainstream audience. No other artist in hiphop can make that claim, especially when most of them do nothing but follow the same old trends and cliches. Kanye actually had the guts to take a stance and go against the grain.

Moron.[/quote]

I'm positive that quote is false, producers have been heavily sampling soul records since the late 80's

Never heard of him. Don't really care.

Umm don't take this the wrong way but if you don't really care why did you bother responding to the post?

Did you think cosigning to that statement would make you appear to be funny and witty?

Or are you that big of a geek that you feel compelled to randomly post in threads becayse it amuses you?

Or maybe you're trying to boost your post count?

Could it even be that you dislike hiphop and this is your way of announcing your distaste for that type of music?

again don't it the wrong way

Agreed, I don't doubt that Kayne may be a little arrogant, but I seriosly doubt that he said all of that.

It was posted by an anonymous user, and reeks of some kind of rumor created to make him look bad.

Best save I ever heard was when Robert Plant did that at the Pontiac Silverdome at a Page & Plant show. He said something like:

"G'Evning Cleveland! :: Pause :: Oh...wait...this is Detroit! Even better!!! Now I'm even HAPPIER to be here!"

He made it into a light hearted joke and it went over very well.
