I think my problem is mainly due to my bios. I decided to add my HP 9100i cdrw from my old computer to this one. I connected the cdrw to secondary slave which shares with my dvd drive. I went into my bios and set my secondary slave to auto detect and on boot it says secondary slave: none. I tried looking for the cdrw in windows to see if my bios actually did find the cdrw but i couldn't find the cdrw in windows either. The light to the cdrw does blink on boot up and i have checked the cables. I also have the cdrw set to slave on the unit. I am running the KA7 RK bios and do not wish to flash unless there is a flaw in the bios. Any suggestions?

OK- First off, you really should flash to the RY bios, it is much more stable, and allows for many more tweaks. I am running my 850 at 1ghz with no GFD. Next, I know when you load optimized defaults, it only enables the primary and secondary master channels only, I need to go in an enable the secondaries manually. Also, if that drive is jumpered to be a master, it won't work because the DVD is already set-up as the master drive. I hope this helps....

I do have the cdrw jumpered as slave. I'm a little confused when you say load the secondaries. I went to the seconday slave in my bios and set it to auto. I did try it on manual but i wasn't sure if i had to specify it was a cdrom somewhere and received an bios error on my next boot up. My old mobo had a place to specify that it was a cdrom but I don't see that with this mobo. Am I'm making a mistake here?

No, it should be auto. I meant that when I loaded the optimized defaults, it would change the primary and secondary slave channels to "Disable". Is the DVD jumpered as a master? That could also cause it. If that is all set, I would try to move your drives around to see if it will "see" it on another channel.

I have IDE Secondary Slave set to auto and Access Mode set to auto. During the boot i see

Primary Master: My Hard drive
Secondary Master: DVD ROM
Secondary Slave: None

So it looks like i have my secondary slave enabled but it just doesn't see the cdrw. I checked the dvd and it's set as master and the cdrw is set as slave. I guess I'll try switching them around and see what happens. Any other suggestions?

Okay I feel like an idiot. I checked all the the cables and power connections and noticed that one end of the ide cable was not completely in on the cdrw. I pushed it in and booted the computer and the bios sees it.

Big, try making the HP the secondary master and the DVD secondary slave. I had a similar problem with the HP9110i and that seemed to correct it. Nevermind...
