I have been re-building computers for some time now. Last year I built a system based on the AOpen AX6BC (ATX) motherboard, P350, voodoo3, etc. on WIN95. A few months ago I built an AT system around a TYAN S1590S Trinity 100AT and a K6-500 cpu and WIN 2000. Both started-up as expected and have been working beautifully.
However, my luck ran short with an ABIT KA7-100 with an Athlon 650. Hope you can give me some idea on how to get this system operational.
I put it together, as usually, very carefully. Started it up, got to find the hard drive, and started WIN 95. When it needed to re-boot, it shutdown, but never came back up. I shut down power manually, started it up?and nothing, not even post. I strip down all components one at a time, down to just the mobo on a piece of cardboard, speaker and power supply. Nothing. The online shop was nice enough to replace it.
Put it back together, and it started up on the WIN95 that was there from the first try. Since most likely WIN95 would not support the VIA chip, decided to install WIN2000. When it needed to re-boot, it shutdown, but never came back up. I shut down power manually, started it up?and nothing, not even post., again!!! I strip down all components one at a time, down to just the mobo on a piece of cardboard, speaker and power supply. Nothing. I even bought a new power supply (rated for 300 w), but made no difference. The online shop was nice enough to replace it, again, but for the last time.
In the meantime I took the Western Digital Caviar 102BA Hard Drive to the machine with the TYAN motherboard. Tried to install WIN200 on it, no luck. Tried WIN98, and it worked beautifully. Thus, either I have a faulty HD or it is not NT compatible.
Now I have a new ABIT KA7-100 mobo, an Athlon 650, 128MB 100PC, a HD with WIN98, voodoo3, SoundBlaster 64, CDROM, etc.?and fear to put it together. I do not want to lose this system again.
What can I do to avoid frying this new motherboard?
Has anyone seen this type of problem?
If I start the KA7-100 computer with the HD from the Tyan computer running win2000, will win2000 act up, freeze or screw up the KA7?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
