With a supporting BIOS version, a 754-pin Sempron would be ok: Asus CPU support thingie Looks like you'd need the 1004 BIOS or higher. Currently the Sempron 3100+ is the only Socket754 variant of Sempron available, unless they just put out some more I haven't heard about.
thank you sir. So in other worse, just update the bios and ill be set? I currently dont have this board installed. Would i need to use an athalon to get it running, update the board... then drop the semp?
Since you have the board already, just look at the sticker on top of the BIOS chip here, more or less. One of the numbers on the sticker will be 100x and show what BIOS it shipped with. 🙂
Bigger picture: if it were me, I'd get the A64 🙂HL2 benchies showing the A64 2800+ > Sempron 3100+. The price difference appears small: Newegg Socket754 selection. And that way you get 64-bit support for later.
edit: heck, or with the A64, you can download the 360-day trial of WinXP Pro 64-Bit from Microsoft if you're the adventuresome type 😀
