I currently have an A64 system built on an Asus k8vse deluxe...ATM, I have 2x512 for 1GB of ram.

I'm gonna make the jump to 2GB, but I need to know if I can get away with just throwing a third (1GB) stick in there, or if I have to bite the bullet and toss my 2x512 sticks...

It's not like s-754 supports dual channel anyway, so that's not an issue, but will the board adjust my timings negatively if I use three sticks?

check your manual....my Skt 754 ASUS K8N-E Deluxe (Nforce 3 chipset) will accept 3 dimms, but if i was gonna whack in a 1Gb stick, (ie a Double sided DIMM) then i would be reduced to DDR200 (from DDR400!)

Okay...I'll dig out the manual when I get back home. (I know I have it)

its the same for the k8v-se deluxe. put 3 dimms in there and your at ddr200. you may be able to manually set it to ddr266 (i am able to) or maybe even ddr333(i can't, boots into windows and then restarts).

Hmm....

Do you know offhand if it'll take 2x1GB dimms without a problem?

it will take 1GBx2 the same as 512mbx2. i think if they are double sided it defaults to 333mhz...but i don't remember. i have mine manually set to 400mhz with my 2 512's an its workin fine

While I can't vouch for your specific mobo, I have a K8T800-based Abit KV8 which is running a 1GB+512MB+512MB setup just fine at DDR 400 with a A64 3400+ Newcastle. It is possible to get lucky, but officially in such a configuration, only DDR 333 is supported. For the record though, this is a limitation of the on-die memory controller, not the mobo.

Ya, this is what I had to do. It did default to 333.
