K8N Neo Platinum Overheating

I recently put together a new system with an K8N Neo Platinum MOBO. System runs great except that it runs very hot. Idle it runs about 72C. I have reseated the fan, heatsink, added thermal compound, bought a new case, added 120mm input and output fans and nothing helps not even a few degrees. Is anyone else having this problem or know of a possible problem of the bios mis-reporting the temp. The only way I can run anything is to turn off the MSI Core Center.

Yea, this would be a good thing to know if there is a problem, b/c I plan on purchasing this board very soon actually.
My oldie but goodie Epox 8KHA+ w/ 1600+ cpu just doesn't have the "umph" it used to back in the day.
Still runs very well though.... but must go faster! ;)

I bought this board because it got really good reviews and it does run great, this is the only problem. I dont really think it is running that hot, I just think that it is not reporting the temp right. I can put my hand on the heat sink and it does not even feel hot.

It measures both the MOBO is in the 40C. The CPU is the one I am concerned about it measures 72C idle in both the BIOS and the MSI Core Center software.

..dang well... I would email MSI support about it first, if you haven't already. If your HSF unit isn't hot at all, then I wouldn't wory so much about it until you hear something back from MSI. Maybe try some gaming or Prime 95 stuff for a bit and power off your PC (unplug it too) and try touching some components on the Mobo and see how hot they are. C'os you shouldn't be able to touch a 165 F for a very long time! ;-) Now not to sound all silly, but are you sure that your not looking at Max temps in the BIOS?

I have e-mailed MSI and all I got was the canned answer, check HS, is fan running, core voltage, clock speed, etc, etc,. And I am sure it is not Max temp in the BIOS. But if I disable the Core Center (the monitoring software) it runs fine, including gaming. I can run Doom 3 all night and it runs fine just reports hot. I am really starting to think that it is just reporting wrong but am wondering why nobody else is having same problem. Just hate to burn up a new AMD 64.

I hear that. I would definitely hate to burn up a new CPU on a new mobo! >:-
Wonder if something is wrong with your cpu? Can you try it in another mobo or know of someone who has a Socket 939 board (NF3 250) that will let you try it in? This way we can determine if it's cpu or mobo.
Wish there was an easier way... Unless someone else has an idea in these forums. Maybe tonight when peeps get off work they can reply with something else.. Keep us posted though and G/L!

I have heard that the initial temperature is not very accurate...you have to reinstall something to make it accurate..read it somewhere..

i have this board running a 64 3200. i put an aftermarket heatsink on the north bridge that has a fan too. my board isnt over clocked- everything is stock. just updated bios to the new 1.40 version from their update utility. current temps:

processor: 35.5 C
mobo: 27 C

make sure you have upgraded to 1.40 bios, because the other ones report wrong. before i updated it said my cpu was 65 C

Ross, what were your temps before:

1. you put the aftermarket HSF on the northbridge

and

2. you upgraded the BIOS?

What I'm getting at is, which of these changes really the difference, assuming that you, too, had high temps with your board at first.

i read the review on here of the mobo before i bought it. so when i ordered the mobo i ordered the aftermarket heatsink. its the thermaltake one that is blue and has a little fan that sticks up on top of it. i never ran the board with the stock gold colored one.

temps before bios 1.40:

60-70 C cpu
25-30 C mobo

temps after bios 1.40:

i havent done any benchmarking on this computer or ran anything heavy (just upgraded the bios about 4 hours ago) so right now the cpu is running between 33 - 37. thats also with my heatsink on the chip at its lowest setting.
25-30 mobo

the mobo temps have never changed for me, but like i said, i never ran the stock heatsink on the board because the review here said it got pretty hot.

Hmmm, ok thanks. Looks like the 1.40 update does the trick. You many not even have needed the northbridge HSF.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear this. I'm leaning towards this board, and that temp issue was a big red flag for me.

im happy with the board. i dont know about over clocking on it, because i have no intention of over clocking my pc. if i wanted it faster than it is, i would have bought faster things :) but the bios has alot of over clocking things if you are wanting to do that.
