K7T Pro2A Success!

Cautious, ever so cautious...

I just finished putting together my new system. It consists of:

MSI K7T Pro2A
TBird 1.2 Ghz
256MB Infeion (sp?) RAM
SuperOrb
SB Live Value
30MB Quantum Ultra 100 HD 7200RPM
linksys net card 10/100
V5-5500AGP
LS120
Acer 50x

To put it bluntly - this is one of, if not the most straight forward system I have ever built. Granted, I have only built a couple of Intel systems before this (I am kinda a novice), but I was expecting the end of the world, and so far, ROCK SOLID BABY.

I haven't pushed it hard yet, but I will install a few games (like Falcon 4, that will push it a bit) and see how it is. But so far, so good.

What I did:

Before I put it together, I saved the new Via 4.1 (125?...from their website) to my LS120.
After setting up the HD in the CMOS and installing windows and winzip, I installed the 4in1s. The only thing that happened that was slightly odd, was on the reboot it asked for a file, I think it was "viagrt.cat" but I couldn't find it anywhere in the browsing...I even tried looking on the CD that came with the board. No go, so I reluctently ignored it....what could I do. Didn't seem to matter, worked like a charm. No conflicts, no nada.

The only thing that seems to be different from mine from some of the others that had problems was that my south bridge seems to be made on week 53 instead of 43 (I guess Dec31).

Anyhow, I just wanted to let you guys know since you all helped me so much with advice on stupid questions I had.

If I can be of -any- help to you fellas with probs with your, let me know and I will try.

Eric😀

Congratulations... I will be building my MSI K7T Pro2-A system very soon.... How large of a file are the 4in1 drivers??? will they fit on a floppy?

No, they wont unfortunately. I think they were 3-4 MB or something like that. Definetly more than 1.4.

Good luck!

That missing VIAGART.CAT is some kind of install bug in the latest 4-in-1's. It's purely cosmetic. Don't sweat it.

Modus

Those .CAT or catalog files don't seem to be important to ANY drivers, just skip the file if it isn't found 🙂

I am sorry! I stand corrected. I have no idea what I was looking at...I think my V5 driver. Yes, they are 827K. Will fit a floppy fine.

The only question I have is I just ran Sandra. EVERYTHING is right where it should be, other than Memory speed....it is somewhere around what it gives for a Duron 600 Spec. Any ideas why? I am using a 256MB Stick at 133.

Thanks

Eric

Ok here we go, just put together a new system for the first time and I have very little hardware/software experience. I only installed the basics (I think).
AMD 900 TBird
MSI K7T PRO 2A
All in Wonder 128 PRO Video Card
Pioneer CD/DVD
Western Digital 20.5G 7200 ATA66 HD
PC133 128 Cas3
Floppy,mouse,keyboard

I formatted my hard drive and installed WindowsME.

I then installed the VIA drivers from the CD that came with Mobo. I thought there were suppose to be 4, only 2 were installed???

I then proceeded to install the drivers for the Video card.

I reboot and get windows protection error -"Driver file that displays items correctly on your screen isn't working"

Can't change any color or pixel settings. and the video card CD doesn't add the ATI program on my computer.

I unstall all drivers, downloaded VIA 4in1 4.25a, and install these drivers but again only 2 not 4.Reinstall video card drivers same problem and errors.

I have now downloaded Via4in1 4.28 and the latest drivers for the video card. I haven't tried this yet.

What else can I try??? Should I go and download the most current windowsME drivers?

Under system settings and device manager:
PCI Multimedia Audio Device has a question mark and a exclamation point. What does this mean?? My video card is in the AGP slot not PCI. Could this be my problem??

Guys I'm lost and starting to wish I never started this project!

I put one together yesterday based on the same board, duron 650 @ 1000 (thx compuwiz1 😉 ) g400 max, maxtox diamondmax +40 drive, etc. Came together very easily and runs like a top, couldn't be more pleased.

Well, here is what I would try nubomb.

Reformat the HD

Disable onboard sound

Reinstall Windows

Install downloaded Via 4n1

finish installing other drivers and crap

Its not like reinstalling Windows would be a big prob for you at this stage. The reformat is probably unnecessary, but thats what I would do...out of habit 😉

Yeah thats what I was thinking. I'm going to start from scratch and see what happens. The 4in1 drivers which version or try them all. The 4.28 version isn't on the VIA website it's only a beta version I think. Or stick with 4.25 which is on the VIA site.

Mine too. I have 3 micron 64 M sticks at 133 in mine with no BIOS tweaks.

Any suggestions?

try going into ur bios and setting the ram to 133 instead of default.
And if you have cas2 ram, change it to that too. 🙂

Thanks FrEstYle29, I haden't noticed that my ram was defaulted in at 100MHz with Sisoft scores on 284,299. I now get 363,401 on a Tbird 650 not yet overclocked. Glad I read your post

Go into advanced chipset bios screen and set dram timimg by SPD to yes, that will default the CAS and dram clock to auto. Then check Sandra, your memory scores will go uppppppppp!

My scoreSandra

🙂

Nubomb We are seeing the exact same thing with a system at the shop right now. It seems to have something to do with the rage pro 128 video. with only the video card installed and the onboard sound disabled all seems to be well but when we try to install the creative soundblaster pci sound card we always get a windows protection error. The tech was working on the system when I left there today. I will check and see if he solved the problem tomorrow and will post the fix here if he came up with one.

What sound card are you using in your system?

UPDATE!!

I reinstalled all updated drivers, and everyhting seems to be working fine, except my DVD player. After about 10 minutes it will lock up with GDI.EXE and Rundll32 errors. Does anyone know what could be causing this??
