k7s5a pro: usb2.0 problems

i'm trying to connect a usb2.0 device. when i do i get message that device should be connected to high speed usb port. however it already is connected to back of the mobo. any ideas what the problem is? i'm running winxp sp2 install, and there are no usb drivers on ecs website.

There are no USB drivers on ECS site because SP2 should bring what's needed. Check in Device Manager: Do you have an "Enhanced" USB controller up and running?

yeah, i have "via usb enhanced host controller"

any ideas what the problem is?

The USB 2.0 ports should be at the front, not the back, IIRC.

manual says back 4 are usb2.0

plus it would seem odd to make the front ones better than back

I am now having a similar problem...same mobo, same OS...
I have been using a card reader for my camera, a SUB 2.0 item and it works fine. Over teh weekend i got a box to put an IDE drive in, and it is to conect to a USB 2.0 port. If i connect it through my 1.1 hub, it works. I get the 'connect it to a USB 2.0 to work faster" message, but when i try that windows does not recognize it at all. I have tried all 4 ports.

Since one item works and the other does not, I have to assume a driver revision or perhaps some bizarre conflict.

Any ideas??

The only other info i can get is in Event Viewer, I get "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur." Id 57. I can find to help or reference on that error.

The 4 USB ports along the back panel are connected through the companion VIA VT6202 USB2.0 Host Controller. The three USB motherboard headers (six ports) are USB1.1 via SIS 735.

VIA has a recent USB driver update with a release date of 02/04/2005 for VT6202 and VT6212 USB2.0 controllers (also applies to VT8235 South Bridge); Version 2.60L.

I installed this driver on the K7S5A Pro and it installs fine, though I don't know how it actually works because I didn't experienced any USB problems.

I DL'd it and am reading the ReadMe - it says XP SP1....are you running SP1 or SP2? I assume from the date (march 22, 2005) that VIA is aware of XP SP2....so does this infer not to use on SP2, or is it just an oversight on their part in the Readme? (the .doc version)

Well, i installed the new drivers anyaway. Still not working as a USB 2.0 device.

I can get slightly farther though - i can get Device Manager to see an item and it cannot identify it. Progress, albeit small. When i check the driver, i get a MS driver with a date of 2001. Perhaps that is somehow at issue?

I will try the drive on a friend's computer (may be a week or 2) and verify it works as it should. He bought the same item at the same time, and it works on his machine (P4 based machine, same OS)

I assume its an oversight, the Release.txt contains:

* 2004/11/23
= Full Release Version 2.59 =
1. Fixed system lockup on Windows XP SP2.

Open the Driver Properties then click on Driver Details. There should be at least two drivers listed, an MS driver and the VIA driver. Each Root Hub should list VULFNTR.SYS and each Host Controller should list VULFNTH.SYS.

Have you checked the BIOS to make sure USB2.0 is enabled? I'm not sure if the rear ports default to USB1.1 when that setting is disabled, or if it completely turns the rear ports off. Worth a look, anyway.

If all else fails, buy an add-in PCI USB controller card, they're affordable enough. The on-board VT6202 controller is located directly on the PCI Bus, so you wouldn't be losing any performance. The VT6202 reportedly had problems and was replaced by the VT6212, which offered slightly better performance. I hear the NEC chipsets are very good, but that is just net rumor.

VIA VT6212L PCI USB2.0 Controller @ CompGeeks.com - $8.75 + shipping (~$6.00)

Zonet PCI USB2.0 Controller RETAIL (NEC chip) @ Newegg.com - $15.00 shipped

SYBA PCI USB2.0 Controller RETAIL (NEC chip) @ Newegg.com - $13.00 shipped

i ran the VIA setup/executable, and it rebooted...so i assume all went OK. I will try my item on a friends computer and he has hte same item, so he'll try it on mine and we'l make sure the hardware works. Teh add in boards are cheap enough.

Die, you a Pittsburgher? I live in Beaver, near the ohio line.

I had the same problem with my USB 2.0 hub and came here looking for an answer, then i checked the manual. It says that USB 2.0 and PCI slot 1 can't be used at the same time, so you either have to disable USB 2.0 in the bios to use pci slot 1 or not use pci slot 1. I'm going to take a look at it as soon as I get home from work.

btw- Professor fate, I grew up in Beaver. I just moved to orlando last august.

I seem to remember this, too, now that you mention it. I never use PCI#1 if I have an AGP card, anway.

Looked in the bios about the PCI slot 1 thing and couldn't find any setting that would affect that. Then I updated my "Via USB host controller" driver and now it works great!
