k7s5a pro, 2400+: worked fine, won't boot today

Hi Everybody,

I built a new computer last week, and it was working great until today. This morning, when I tried to turn it on, the power would go on, but nothing would happen. I will list what I have observed:

1. There are no beeps.
2. All my fans (case, CPU, and power supply) start running.
3. The CD and HD activity LEDs turn on and remain on, but I do not here anything loading from the HD.
4. The floppy light doesn't turn on.
5. The reset switch doesn't reset it, and holding down the power switch button doesn't do anything.
6. I can only turn it off by hitting the power switch on the power supply or surge protector.

Now wait, something interesting happened, and this is what is making me really confused.

After a few tries of trying to turn it on unsuccessfully, I tried one more time. The computer actually booted. It went into Windows XP, but once it reached the Login screen, the screen went black. The computer didn't turn off, but it just went blank and I got the same symptoms as above: can't reset or turn it off or do anything.

Here are my system specs:

ECS K7S5A
Athlon XP 2400+
1 x 512 PC2100 Crucial DDR
Cooler Master XDream
Visiontek Xtasy 9100 AGP 64 MB
TDK 4800B CD-RW
Maxtor 120 GB 7200 8MB Hard Drive
2 x Case Fans
Antec SLK2600AMB with 300 W Smart Power Supply

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Right off the bat, does this sound like a hardware or software problem? It would seem like hardware to me, except that one fleeting moment when it actually showed the XP Login screen. This is also the second K7S5A that I tried, because the other one had a broken memory slot.

Thanks again!

Reset the video card and memory for starters. Remove anything not needed to boot the computer. Reset the cmos too.

The two times that I built systems around the K7S5A Pro, I had problems. One had a dead IDE port and the other had the same exact problem as you. I have sworn off the Pro boards.

I've built quite a few systems using the K7S5A (standard) and that board was always solid as a rock.

You check the mem? might be bad mem (that's what happened to me - your symptoms sound similar to mine). Check the vid card too.

I just took one out of a system I built about 4 months ago. The cpu fan and ps fan would come on that was it. I swaped all kinds of parts into it. DEAD. This thing ran 24/7 the whole time. They went on vacation and shut it down came home and this happens. The thing that really got me was that board was the second one. The first never worked from the begining. I have built a couple systems using that board that are still going, but never again. I bought the Asus to replace it since we had sdram instead of ddr. That really limited the choices of chipsets. :frown:
