k62 on old board, can't tell if L2 cache is enabled for real

are you sure that the motherboard supports cxt core. The fact that it boots at 6X means nothing because it is detwermined by the cpu, not the motherboard. Perhaps there are a few k6-2 optimisations not being used because the bios has some dificulty identifying the chip. Goto amdzone forums and ask or goto tweakbase.com or a similiar site and get k6-2 optimisation programs. powertweak may be useful as well, the newest versions may implement the optimisationms i think. try that.

The M571 BIOS does support the CXT core K6-2.

Besides, even if this were the problem causing it not to boot at 75 or 83 MHz bus with K6-2 (which it isn't), no optimization software could help it. You don't even get as far as loading something from storage drives, it hangs earlier.
