Just get a regular heatsink and fan. The k6+ cpus run very cool because they are mobile chips, the low voltage helps also ;)

As far as I can tell the only differences between the K6-x+ and the K6-xE+ are the case temperature rating (85C K6-x+, 70C K6-xE+) and the marketing.
The K6-x+ is marketed as a mobile processor, while the K6-xE+ is marketed as an embedded processor.

Oh and the K6-IIIE+ is offered at 550MHz.

StockJock,

What cheap case are you talking about??? I see one at Aaronix for $17, but their shipping is like $24!!!! Talk about a ripoff.

I'm trying to do the same thing as far as settin up a cheap 2nd system and the same MB/CPU combo is about the best I've come up with.

Anyone know of a good cheap case somewhere???

stockjock: I got that mb from overstock a month ago. really like it. MSI made them for gateway. I'm used to VIA chipsets, and this board (ALI V chipset) was a dream to set up compared to those. I've got it running Win98SE with a k6/300. You may need a BIOS upgrade. The file is 7507392.exe for BIOS rev 0AAQM022 on the Gateway support site. (I didn't need it for my older CPU).

I got three of the MSI 5185 mainboards from Overstock. They all work good. In one I have a K6-3-350, which I run at 400 MHz using the default 2.2 voltage. This board has all kinds of voltage settings down the 1.3volt. On the negative side, I don't really think this mainboard recognizes the CXT core of the newer K6-2 and 3 chips. But it does work. The onboard ATI video is good enough for many people.

Try Rawpower to enable different settings the bios won't set.

The highest I could clock this CPU is 550Mhz 2.1v-stable. 600Mhz 2.2v is a Windows crasher. My Soyo 5EMA+ v1.0 has 14 amp regulators, so it's either at the limit, or I need 2.3v.

Rawpower is a utility made by the same guy that makes CPUidle, it allows Cpu setting to be turned on that the Bios will not allow.

RawPower is Here

The MSI board has an ATX form Factor. I would be interested to know if anyone has tried to use such a board with an AT case and power supply.
Does anyone know of an AT board that would work with this processor? This could make a great upgrade for an old P100.

Well, I will let you know..I ordered an AT case by mistake..I have ordered this very case before and it seems like it had both AT and ATX connectors on the PS...not a bad 250W case for $13..cost more to have it shipped..like $24...so for about $37 bucks I've got a good cheap case...
