I have only heard of one person who managed to get the K6-2+ working properly in the Tyan 1590. Supposedly the maximum it would boot at was 300MHz. He replaced the bios chip with one from Unicore that cost 70 USD.

I just ordered a K6-III+. I will try it in my 1590.

if you mobo works with k6 3, it'll work with 3+ right? I mean, same voltage and multiplier and all.

And hence the reason they made the As-Is warranty. Did you not read they figured people would do exactly that. Drop the K63+ into a system set at 3.3v or 2.2v. And Ker-Pow goes the beautiful k6-3+ processor and if it was under warranty they'd burn through their stock and actually have to buy more at FULL PRICE.:D

I e-mailed Epox tech support with the question will the EP-mvp4a support the K6-3+. Here is the interchange:
question:
On your website it says the following for bios update mvp49b30.exe :
"Added BIOS support for AMD-K6-2+ CPU"this is on:
http://www.epox.com/html/english/support/motherboard/bios/mvp4.htm
If it will support the K6-2+, does that mean it will support the K6-3+?
And if not, don't you have plans to upgrade the bios to do that?
There are many of your loyal customers that are anxiously wanting to know this. I am following a thread at anandtech and will post your reply.
Reply:
Dear User,
The BIOS update allows the K-6 2 + CPU to be recognized but we don't
support this processor. This processor was designed for mobile systems.
Question:
Does that mean that a K6-2+ or 3+ will not operate properly on these boards? I have heard that people have done it, but will it operate properly, and if not please elaborate a little on this.
Reply:
We do not recommend users to use the AMDK6+ processors on our socket 7 mb. Any used of the processor are on your own risk.
Question:
Are you saying that it may not work properly or that it could actually
damage the motherboard?
Reply:
It may not work properly or it might damaged the mb.
Well -
I'm not sure how reliable this is - maybe mostly cya - any comments?

doesn't the k63 run at 2.1v? And the k63+ run at 2.0 or 2.1v? How's that going to fry the cpu?

adolfmuhammed,

thanks for the info~ actually my Tyan S1590S (i think it's the latest rev, got it in July) is currently running a K6-2 500(retail CPU, HS/fan) OCed to 550Mhz 100% stable at the original voltage setting of 2.2V. I have CPUIdle running and that keeps the heat down big time. On my Tyan manual there's jumper settings for voltage all the way down to 2.0V, so I am guessing it'll work fine with this K6-3+.

Let me know how things turn out for you!! keep me posted~

Hi All! I am the webmaster at PCliquidator.com. I have enjoyed reading the messages posted here and hope I am not violating any trusts by posting here.

Here are a few facts that I can add

1) The reason for the "As-Is" has been discussed here by one of the members of the group. I fried the first chip I tested by not setting the jumper correctly. I figured that if I fried the chip so easily, perhaps the customers would do the same. With a tolerence of the "Mobile" chip being only 10% of 2.0V (1.9V-2.1V)it would result in a large number of returns if we warrantied them.

2) They are indeed K6-III+ cpu's

3) Yes we did cut and paste from the AMD website, so the .25 micron was an error. We have since modified the website to reflect .18 micron. The picture of the chip was also a cut and paste and is not of the chip we are selling.

4) we bought thousands of these things, that is how we can sell them at this price. The quantity we purchased is usually only done by manufacturers!

5) They are new!

6) We have tried a lot of super socket 7 motherboards that don't have BIOS support in them for the CPU and all gave pretty much the same results - did not display the correct info in the BIOS splash page, but ran very fast and benchmarked both in DOS and Windows at full speed.

7) We did not really run out of stock, but needed the night to get caught up with the orders to see the actual available number of CPU's available. The orders came in so fast that our server could not keep up with the inventory levels. They are available on our site at the time I am writing this.

Thank you for your interest!

Did it fry at 2.2v, or is that the top of spec? I'll be getting mine Wed. Hopefully it will run at 6x jumpered at 2x, 2.1v.

The K6-2+, K6-III+, and the standard power K6-2E+ and K6-IIIE+ all have a typical operating voltage of 2.0V. Their 'absolute maximum' rating is 2.2V.
All of them have the same model id which is 13.
(The older K6-2 is model 8, K6-III - model 9)

Not true, I have a k6-2+ 500 running on my Jetway Ali Aladdin V M/Board at 600mhz with a core voltage of 2.3, its been running like that for months now without a problem, however 2.3v IS the absolute max with the k6-2+, not sure about the K6-3+ but since it is the same chip model just with an extra 128kb on chip L2 cache then I assume its the same.

Anybody know if this CPU would work on an old Asus P55T2P4?? I was just reading on Toms Hardware web-site about how to get the P55T2P4 to run at 2.0v... but I want to make sure that a K6-3 will work on it!

What are the advantages of the K6-3 over a K6-2?

Thanks,
-Skaven

"The K6-2+, K6-III+, and the standard power K6-2E+ and K6-IIIE+"

What's the difference in the K6-III+ and K6-IIIE+. I've never heard of the "E" before. If anyone get's one of these K6-III+, please post any results. ie overclocking patches etc.

thanks

Just ordered mine, so we'll see what happens. I'm not ready to get rid of the S7 yet. I also have an ASUS A7V/Duron600@840, but still want to use my old stuff.

Even if merchandise is sold as-is, there are laws that state that it must come with a 30 day return/replacement period. As-is, I believe, means that merchandise may be sold in non-retail packaging. However, any vendor or retailer must acknowledge a 30 day return policy on nonperisheable/nonconsumable goods. Even with a no return policy, a vendor must have a replace/exchange policy if the goods are defective. I read this when I got my business/vendor's licence in Tennessee (no, I'm not a vendor, calm down;)).

I'm not entirely sure where this policy goes if the vendor doesn't know whether a part works or not, but my thoughts is that a vendor should determine whether something is functional or not before selling it, and, if a vendor is selling you something that doesn't work, they should make you aware of that first. I know that you can't just sell broken hardware, even AS-IS and not bill it as broken. I think that if you recieved one item of unknown status, and it was nonfunctional, you should be able to exchange it for another equivalent item of unknown status. Although from the sound of things, they'd probably argue with you and you'd need a lawyer just to get what you deserve as a customer.

just my bloated, babbling $.02 (and you got it for free! hot deal!:))

ok..I did the deal...I bought the K6III+ for $61 shipped and then went to Overstock.com and bought the MSI Super 7 MB for $39 but I bought some cheap picture frames for $11.95 and got to use my $20 off $50 coupon ...so I got the motherboard and frames for $30....so the CPU and MB cost less than $92. Did I do ok...my first time doing these Hot deals with you guys....I will then go to Aaronix.com and pick up a $13 ATX mid case with 250W PS. I already have spare Ram and HD and CD and FDD....Please tell me if I can do better than what I did..for a really cheap system......

I got mine today... shows up as K6III+ in H.Oda CPUId...

Running 450 at 1.8v (I don't know how to set the MB to anything between 1.8 and 2.2)... Figured I was better off at the lower voltage... I won't be overcloking until my better cooler gets here...
