K6 III 450 & K6 III 450+

Whats the difference between the K6 III 450 and the K6 III 450+ and how does Win98 identify the "+" ??????

The "+" means that it has the extended 3dnow! instructions that the Athlon has. The other difference is that the K6-III+ is made on a .18 micron process, rather than the bulkier (and older) .25 micron process (really, the .25 was more like a .22, but that's besides the point). This causes power dissipation to go down, as the K6-III @ 450 mhz is 16 watts max v. the 30 on the 2.4v version, and the 20 on the 2.2v version. I'm not sure if windows recognizes it differently....sorry

Windows probably just doesn't recognize that "+". K6-2+ will be recognized as "K6-III", too (what it basicly is ). Here's what linux thinks about K6-2+ (with kernel fix to bring back MTRR, damn I'm good ):

The K63+ is supposed to be for mobile computers, but if your motherboard supports the lower voltage, it should work for desktop too. An upgraded bios should do the trick, otherwise, if the bios doesn't recognize it, some of the features, like write allocate is disabled and performance suffers. The K63+ is very overclockable, unlike the regular k63, some people have o/c it to as much as 600, like me. W/ a regular K63, the max I can get was 500 MHz, both chips are 450 stock.

I'd be real interested to see how compatible the K63+ is on the Asus P5A rev 1.03 with bios 1.007 (I think). Anybody tried this combo?
