Hello, Right now I have a 350Mhz k6-2 processor. I would like to upgrade to a k6-3+ @ 450Mhz. I am wondering do most k6-2 motherboards support them? Anyway to check what kind of motherboard I have without opening up the pc?
Your board probably will support it...BUT...make sure your voltage will go down to at least 2.1v, and the other thing...your board will probably only detect it as a K6III...if that is so..then you mite see if there is a bios upgrade for your MB and then it might..and I say might detect the "+"...
good luck...
You can run a k6-3+ up to 2.4v maximum...but would not do it without any special cooling at all. Your board probably supports 2.2v on up if nothing else, 2.2v would probably be a pretty safe bet.
However tho, I wouldn't go and upgrade my CPU if I didn't want to open the case off of my PC to see what sort of motherboard I have.
You can use the FIC brand motherboards model VA503+(AT) or
the PA2013(ATX). I have both. I just flashed the BIOS in the PA2013 to verson JI4330 to make it compatible with the K6-III+/450MHZ. The VA503+ needs BIOS version JE4330. You must have a K6-2 CPU installed while you flash it. Here is a hardwarecentral link that helps alot.
You will have to get the BIOS file from FIC's taiwan website vice the US website. It is a beta but works for me. My PA-2013 has 2MB cache and is version 2.0 E-0036. FIC also makes version 2.1.
