I am in the process of installing Win98lite on my carputer. I had unplugged a power adapter to plug in a CD-ROM to install it. Well, that 12v plug i happened to pull was attached to the CPU fan all the way at the end. I made it most of the way through the install with no problems, until it started locking up.

At least it's not like T-Birds where they fry at like 2 seconds.

The K6 series was great. I've upgraded a few recently and they are still running strong!

Back in the day when my computer was sputtering around trying to play a DVD, I bought a DVD decoder card. I asked my sister to hand it to me and when my hand came close, a loud spark flew from my hand into the base of the card (where you plug it in). We stared at each other for a moment thinking "CRAP, it's TOAST". But we plugged it in to see what would happen and it still works fine after 4 years. :D

Tbirds, Durons, etc. will *not* fry in two seconds with just the FAN unplugged. They most definitely won't make it through an OS installation. (Well maybe DOS)

Take the HS off though and it's ?³?æ?¤?È?ç in less than a second!

When CPU's were well under 10 watts many builders would turn it on with no processor heatsink installed for a quick POST test! Can't do that anymore!

Cheers!

I had some K6-2 and 3's. The K6-3+ was alright, almost like a duron. The rest sucked hairy donkey balls, dudes. Face it.

Oh and wtf is win98LITE?

hehe, my family JUST had the old K6-2 450 system replaced with the huge Dell 8250 deal. Sure is a workhorse tho.

It strips down windows to bare minimum. Rids registry and lots of other things of excess garbage. It also allows you to choose explorer versions.

Very cool:

I've got my K63+ 450@550 running my server. Good and reliable, had a 37 day uptime before I had to reboot it today. Fast enough for what I use it for too.

My old K6 300 is still running in my mom's computer. I usually hand down my old processors. My K6 300 made the most rounds though, first my fathers computer, then my sisters, then my mother's.

Funny...I have a k6-2/500 mini-atx setup that I'm gonna configure soon.

Watch for it in the FS/FT forum ;)

My first PC was a k6-300 with an ASUS txp4 motherboard.

I remember when my main system was a K62 350 2.2v. I had that thing overclocked to 400MHz, but it took 2.9v to do it. Ran like that fine for a few months before it got replaced with the K63+, heheh.

I was over at a friend's house trying to assist him with some work on the PC for his daughter. The computer had a Pentium 60 MHz chip in it. The fan stopped working a few years ago, so he pulled the heatsink/fan off it and ran it without any coolling. :Q :Q :Q

Those CPUs didn't run too cool either. He was pretty lucky to get such good mileage out of the computer. However, today, it finally wouldn't recognize the any hard drives anymore. Apparently the built-in controller was not functioning in a normal fashion anymore, so we took apart the PC and collected the parts. For a while, I held the Pentium 60 CPU in my hand with fond memories. I remember about 9 years ago when the Pentium 60 CPUs hit the streets. One of my cheap CPU and memory suppliers sold the CPU for about $750.00. Today, we'd be lucky to get $.75 for it. Now, if I just had a time machine to go back 9 years - I would have been able to sell it for $700 and advance back to the current day a richer man. ;)

My old K6-2 450 system is still in use at my work.
they are okay CPU's.. good for office apps and other basic tasks... bad for gaming, but a strong reliable CPU.
