Ok, I finally got the ubuntu live cd to boot by hitting "F6" and deleting the entry "quiet splash," then starting up in safe mode. I think I got the nvidia drivers installed using envy, my xorg.conf doesn't mention it, but compiz runs and the nvidia logo appears when I reboot.

I also switched to KDE from Gnome.

I also got Ubuntu installed on my flash drive in case anyonoe is wondering

Congrats :). I use Debian/KDE myself, and I like it a little better than Gnome, I think. Getting rid of 'quiet splash' is the first thing I do when I start an install. Last time I did it I ran into an problem that I would have had no clue about if I didn't know how to get rid of the splash and view the output.

Thanks, I was wondering how long a reply would be in coming :p

The only problem is that since ubuntu takes up most of the partition on my flash drive, I now have a 73mb flash drive with ubuntu on it. (in windows, at least)

Congrats!

Let me know how Ubuntu runs off that flash drive. I would do a similar setup, but I'm only worried that the flash drive would die quicker due to the amount of write cycles an operating system would put on it.

I actually install both gnome and KDE on most boxes since I like different utilities available with both one or the other.
