11-17-2004 Sears, KMart to Merge in $11 Billion Deal

Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Kmart Holding Corp. on Wednesday said they would merge in an $11 billion deal to form the third-largest U.S. retailer.

The companies said in a joint statement that the new company, Sears Holdings, will have about $55 billion in annual revenues, 2,350 full-line and off-mall stores, and 1,100 specialty retail stores.

Let the layoffs begin.

Will this 3rd place Retailer have any muster against Wally World???

Edit: Updating thread Title that it is in fact the smaller recently out of Bankruptcy K-Mart buying out the larger Sears.

They don't have a chance. This is a last ditch deal before going under maybe five or ten years from now.

On one side you have the argument that free trade yada yada yada let WallMart do its thing and force other big retailers out of business.

On the other hand you have people screaming that the products WallMart offers are either sub-standard, you get what you pay for, or its destructive for other business and to the economy.

Something like that.

My view?

Free trade all the way. Not the current system but real free trade, not selective free trade.

Arguments against this is total chaos and that people like me are retards who don't understand economics and such a system is total failure.

But when you question why you get a response like "umm... hold on let me dig up some BS MS Money article. Yeah that will teach you."

Reality, which the market, researchers, CEOs, and government isn't living in actually would benefit from an accountable free trade. Free trade is only chaos without accountability. Much like government.

*points finger at Democratic Party, Republican Party, most State and local governments and boards with numerous immunities to laws, and the assortment of business and special interest groups propping them all up like a toilet seat does for skid marks*

Accountability would mean that the Walltons would be behind bars right now on countless charges that are just too many to name. Suffice it to say they would be spending the rest of their natural lives in prison. Same for most business and market leaders including a very large number of local, state and federal government officials and administrators.

Reality? Won't happen because these are the same people propping the other group up that keeps them from relative harm and in business rather than in jail. It's a vicious cycle. Short of the nation coming to its senses it won't ever happen.

With most Americans, and this is true for just about any nation, as ignorant as they are it's easy to control and manipulate the sheep. Especially playing them off against each other (Reps and Dems) so that they themselves don't come under any real scrutiny.

I admit I was one about oh... 3 or 4 years ago.

9/11 had me do research and the more I researched the more I didn't like what I learned.

A friend of mine recently surmized the reality of world knowledge in what I consider a modern average family (husband and wife, 1 kid + 1 on the way, with them in their late 20s).

Paraphrased "XXXXX you are my only source of news on whats going on. I don't have time for any of that. I just have too much on the go with the kid, wife, job, home etc etc"

Kinda sad but that's reality. They aren't the only ones either. Most kids don't seem to grow up even caring about news, be it BS or not, Hockey or whomever they are dating is far more important than any painful reality the world offers. eg. I was one of 2 people in a class of roughly 30 who raised their hands in High School when asked by our History Teacher if anyone keeps abreast of news by any means at all be it newspaper, TV, radio etc". That was about 8 years ago. Nothing changed from what I hear and see.

Sad indeed.

I cannot. I wouldn't support Kerry either if he was President. It's like trying to pick the best looking turd from a pile and trying to convince yourself and others that "Hey I think I got a winner!".

Not gona happen.

My alternative is an accountable system. That does not currently exist in any major government I'm familiar with. Why? Simple. Parties like the Libertarian Party, which I do support, are stone walled.

2000 election every single 3rd party delegate was barred from entering to see the debate, let alone take part.

2004 election the LP Pres candidate, and another Pres candidate (Green party I think) gets arrested trying to serve a court order at the 2nd debate.

What's next for 2008? Stay tuned. heh

I don't really have an opinion about the mindset of the American consumer as influenced by corporate brainwashing...but I do know how I think.

I shop at Wal-Mart, I shop at Sears, I don't shop at K-Mart anymore. I would transfer my spending dollars to a Sears Grand store from Wal-Mart in a second.

I like Wal-Mart, but their apparel lines are low end, discount brands. Sears Grand stores, located in former K-Mart locations, would offer almost everything that Wal-Mart has- but better clothing lines, superior hardware departments, and also groceries.

If you shop at Wal-Mart, you know the reasons why it would be a pleasure to have an alternative. This is why Target is doing so well.

Actually it is Kmart that is buying Sears.

Which is bizarro.

K-Mart 11 Billion Company that just came out of Bankruptcy.

Sears 41 Billion Company.

It doesn't matter as they are taking the Sears name for the Parent Company but will continue to use both names of stores.

Now just wait...we will be seeing the blue light flashing in sears and bob villa hawing kmart deli sandwiches
