JW: What will happen if Obama brings the troops back?

As far as I can understand, these guys are being compensated for their time spent there already...but what will happen when they return home to no work? Or what if they require ongoing medical care?

Not to be heartless, but I am wondering whether or not taxpayers will have to start coughing up money to take care of these guys?

I do not want to fault the troops, since it's their job to take orders from the President, but I will be really mad if we will have to bail out the troops in the coming months. They knew the risks of joining the military, and they have been taken care of while on duty.

I just don't want to become their welfare provider when they are off duty.
I somehow feel that this is going to be a huge issue soon, or am I just wrong on this whole thing and soldiers don't get any after-duty compensation at all?

Obama isn't going to bring them all back like the foaming at the mouth lefties think, we will have a presence there for a long time

But who takes care of soldiers when they return home from any war? Does the government still take care of them?

they are still soldiers employed by the army whether they are deployed or not

now if you are talking about the govt discharging loads of soldiers... for one, that will never happen. but if they do, that should cheapen the labor, allowing businesses to create products cheaper, giving them better profits, leading them to expand and create more jobs. or, we can just have a pity party for the short-sighted warm-fuzzy feeling lovers and cry about unemployment.

Until their enlistment is up, yes.

But they won't be coming home soon. A draw down perhaps, but it's going to take some time.

Many get civilian jobs. A guy I knew who went into the marines is a good mechanic now.

I don't know much about the military, but if they are active duty, of course they will continue to be paid for the rest of their duty. I'm sure some will eventually rotate to Afghanistan, others in bases around the US and world. When their enlistment is up, and they do not re-enlist, they become civilians, just like always. If they were reserve or guard, they will go back to their jobs.

I guess enlistment rates have increased some since the war on terror, but I don't think to a large amount that we all of sudden have this huge amount of soldiers coming out.

I've always heard about how this thing in Iraq is going to go for a long time. I guess I never completely believed that. Moreover, what about this pact that was recently passed? It sounds like after the UN mandate expires January 1, the new agreement has the US and coalition forces with a some less autonomy. The middle of next year, which is pretty dang close, has them leaving all Iraqi towns, followed by a complete withdrawal (at least any significant presence) in 2011. The Iraqis themselves have said that could change due to conditions, but from what I read, we are truly leaving pretty soon.

They'll do what veterans have always done. The vast majority will find productive employment and meaningful lives. Some will drink, do drugs, commit unspeakible crimes, and have made-for-TV movies made about them. Some will serve their communities as politicians until years later they get ripped to shreds by foamy-mouthed chickenhawks.

You're thinking of 1950 when all the soldiers discharged from WW2 were flooding the workforce. That is an entirely different scenario, primarily because those troops were draftees, while our own troops are professional and employed by the government full time. The only caveat is the National Guard, which has also been deployed, but considering they're basically part time soldiers, they shouldn't hit us too hard.

If, by some chance, out troops are ever removed from Iraq and the hundreds of other places they are currently located, we will be saving so much money due to the decrease in military budget requirements and it will be more than enough to provide for every soldier. Now, I doubt it will happen or the money will ever be spent like that, it's just something to think about (aka, how much money we are wasting right now on pointless military involvements).

all of the reserves will return to their old jobs, which are guaranteed by law while they are on duty. anyone who was hired to fill that temporary vacancy will either stay on or be laid off.

They get a free ride through school if they want and haven't gone yet, but after that I'm pretty sure they're on their own.

Of ALL the people in this country that one might be worried about bailing out, you're worried about our country's SOLDIERS? These are the people who have committed to defending your spoiled ass in time of war. They committed to putting their lives at risk so you can post on your internet forum and say how YOU wouldn't want to "bail them out." Maybe you should be thankful that we don't have forced conscription and that it isn't you out there who has to worry about coming home to no job and a shitty economy.

Or maybe you should go enlist and get some fucking perspective.

EDIT I'm not saying one way or the other about any economic burden. I'm merely commenting on the OP's state of mind here.
