JVC Noise Cancelling Headphones $48.99

what so special about these noise cancelling headphones? Seeing them a lot these days. Just wondering how much of difference.

The point of noise cancelling headphones is to let you talk to people in a very noisy environment without shouting, while protecting your hearing.
If all you want to do is block out noise, then ear protectors or ear plugs work fine.
If you want to block out noise and listen to music, then ear buds work fine, as do over-the-ear headphones.

how well do they work.. i've alawsy been wondering..
I got bumped up to Business class on an international flight, and they handed out some over-the-ear noise cancelers. It had a switch to turn the circuit on and off. I played with it to see if it was really the circuit or the ear muffs that was taking away the noise.

Airplane engine noise generally doesn't bother me (especially no on a 747), but the noise cancelation actually made a whole lot of difference. So much so that I left them on for almost the entire 14 hour flight. So much so that I've been looking for a pair for the office!

There have been a few threads on noise canceling headphones. Search all the topics and you'll find them.

check out the PHILIPS HN100 noise cancelling phones at PepBoys. They are $24 after a $20 mail in rebate. I just picked them up yesterday, haven't tried listening in them yet though. the earcups are comfortable but the split frame over the head is kinda annoying. probably gotta play with adjustment. in any case, this is the cheapest noise cancelling phones on the market AFAIK.

Kragen on the west coast (california) has nc headphones for $20. They look like bose knockoffs. They seem to work pretty well.

I got the Philips HN100's. Paid about $50 for them. They sound ok but they're cheap plastic crap and I managed to already pull the cord out of the earcup.

I'm going to try these JVC's. I've always had good luck with JVC stuff :\

good ones need to cover the ears..first of all they have to block sound manually..or else its pretty futile. then the mics on each earcup pic up low/med freq mechanical noise..like planes and such and invert..thus canceling such noise. high frequency noise not really affected..which is why u gotta have a decent mechanical seal between head and phone. u sometimes see those normal over the ear smaller headphones that call themselves noise canceling, they are a joke.

I have three or four pairs of sub $100 headphones with active noise reducing circuitry. I'd rank these in the middle of the pack. They're around average comfortwise. That the cord winds up is a very convenient feature (note that you have to have them "folded" for the wind feature to work). Sound is decent. Unfortunately the noise reduction part is below average when compared to other headphones in this price range.

These work just O.K. from what I have read, and the deal isn't that hot, I know you can find these for around the same price. I have seem them at a few places for less then $50.
