JVC camcorder software

Can I buy some other software to upload the video from my daughter's video camera to a Vista computer? Or, do I need any software other than Windows Vista?

Camera: JVC GZ-MC500

It has a 4 gig Microdrive, which the instructions say is just like a CF card. It will also read SD cards as well. The video is in MPEG-2 format, I believe. If I connect the camera to my PC shouldn't the pc just be able to read the data as though it's a portable hard drive?

I am a complete NOOB when it comes to photography, so please accept my apologies if this post seems comprehensively STUPID. 🙂

Also, there is a cable missing. I believe the uplink cable should be mini-USB to standard USB. Does that make sense? The manual, incredibly, doesn't describe the cable. 🙁

I can get one from any camera store?
