In an issue of Rolling Stone a few weeks ago there was a story about N.E.R.D. and is was revealed that some of the tracks on Justified were actually written for Michael Jackson to record. So that explains (at least in part) the similarity in sound to MJ.

A quick look at his album on allmusic.com reveals that he had co-writers on every single song. I highly doubt he contributed much to the writing process. The same goes for Avril Lavigne, who likes to make a big to-do about writing "her" songs when in fact, the song-factory outfit called "The Matrix" did 90% of it.

These artists may appear to be more legit than the late-90's bubblegum craze, but it's really all a facade. The record industry invests billions in creating and manufacturing artists that market research has shown appeals to kids. They've changed the image, that's all.

The Neptunes created the beats for Timberlake's most popular solo songs, two of which are called "Like I Love You" and "Rock Your Body" (not sure if those are exactly the right names). I wish the Neptunes would have taken the beats from those two songs that they sold to Timberlake and used them for their own songs (and inserted their own vocals, as Timberlake's voice is annoying as hell IMO).

There are two guys on the Neptunes (Pharrell and Chap) that do all the beats and, like others here have said, are freaking geniuses. Timberlake's solo career wouldn't be half as successful as it has been had it not been for the Neptunes. AFAIK, the Neptunes have produced beats for people/groups like No Doubt, ODB, Jay-Z, Usher, and Blige (among others I can't remember).

Btw, John Mayer is great.
