Justifiable Software Piracy?

I was just thinking...do the software developers, on some level, bring piracy onto themselves?

Let's take for example, the recent PC release of Halo. I had pre-ordered this game on ebgames.com months ago. I was really looking forward to playing on the LAN with the other guys in my apartment here at school. But a few weeks before the release date, a guy in one of my classes got the beta. So I was asking him how the co-op play was over the network and he said they had removed that feature from the PC release. That evening after classes were over I went home and canceled my order. If I had gotten this game before i discovered this lacking I would have felt gipped out of a decent portion of the $50 the game cost as I never heard directly that this feature had been removed and it was one of the most popular features on the xbox version.

There are also many other games that are hyped up to be wonderful and then end up being total duds.

Now I am not saying that stealing games is right - the companies that make good games deserve our support. But what about games like Halo and others that are a disappointment? I don't mind spending $50 for a good game, but I don't have $50 to waste on a game that isn't what it was advertised to be. I personally don't support piracy nor do I think it's right, but I can sort of understand how people could get frustrated enough to begin pirating games. Even if it is just to see what they are like. I think that honesty and demos may really help the software industry...or at least PC game industry curtail piracy. Am I way off base? Any opinions?

How does a game sucking justify you not paying for it? If it sucks, don't get it, legally or otherwise.

My point is, often you don't know it sux till you have wasted you $50 and can't return it.

what do you think game reviews are for let alone demos.

Not all companies put out demos. And a lot of companies hype up games to the point where I will get them on release day only to discover I have been misled.

All I am saying is that i understand how people can become frustrated w/ the industry.

the reason why EA doesn't release demos for C&C games until way long AFTER the game release, is because they don't want potential suckers to be warned forehand. look at what they did to RA2/YR, they did the same to generals/zer0 hour, just sweep it under the rug, and watch stock fly above

$98+, more expensive than ebay by now...

I think it's funny when people say they have to have the game on release day....

But then again I guess if I knew were never going to see a female naked in my lifetime, I'd be waiting for the newest game too.

I have to admit it, I got a copy of Quake from a friend back 6 years ago. I never would have bought it. Was not interested in it at all before I got the copy - which was pushed on me to try. As a result of getting the copy and seeing how good it was I bought Quake, Q2, Q3A and many others based on that engine. Yes I realize that this does not justify having accepted the copy but it sure worked out well for id and the software industry (on a single person scale). To this day, every game I play (for more than 5 minutes) I buy...just not necessarily in that order. I definitly want to support the developers of games I love. Conversely, I don't want to support crappy games which is why I like to try them out first before giving them my $$.

I generally agree. I try to find someone who's got it to either play at their house or borrow, before I pay. Very few games will interest me for more than 5 minutes. Literally. So I don't buy those.

I've bought RTCW, Q1, 2, and 3, Unreal, Unreal 2, a MahJongg game, Homeworld, Diablo, Earthworm Jim, Mecwarrior2, Red Faction, and a few Worms editions. (Not sold on Worms 3d yet...) So I do buy games, but only after I've tried them.

Buy CloneCD. Go to shop and buy game of choice. Keep receipt. Copy and take back to shop. Repeat process twice at every game shop within your area. Sit back and get warm fuzzy feeling. Laugh at nerds who abuse you for it. Repeat till fade...

can you replicate a honda and leave the original on the lot?

also,it cost "nothing" to test drive a new honda.
cant really say the same about a new game.

What difference does that make in terms of right or wrong ?

Most games have demos, and a test drive isn't the equivalent of stealing, which downloading full games is the equivalent of.

does a retail box magically disappear from best buys shelf when someone downloads a game?

"does a retail box magically disappear from best buys shelf when someone downloads a game?"

Actually the opposite happens. A game that should have been sold stays sitting on the shelf.
