What did Mr Tapardjuk say that cost him his portfolio? Why, Mr Tapardchuk had the temerity to suggest that domestic violence is sometimes initiated by women. He casually remarked in an e-mail - not even meant for anyone's eyes but his senior staff - that women who start domestic disputes should share the blame where violence is involved: "Often the man is charged [with domestic violence] even though the conflict may have been initiated by the female partner."

i have to say political correctness run amoke. And from watching cops i have to say he is right. I have seen cops show up at a house find out the women started the fight (attacking the guy and hitting firsT) and since the guy fought back he is the one to get jailed.

I was raised that you never hit a woman. In college, I took quite a few gender studies classes that convinced me that we need to end this nonsense about "never hitting a woman" and turn it into "never hit anyone," which is a more socially beneficial message to have. Yes, it's not right for a big man to beat his wife, and that douchebag needs an ass-whooping; but it's also not right for that same douchebag to go beat up some skinny guy at the bar, is it? What if his wife was a black belt; wouldn't there be some expectation that she could kick ass back? I've met some big woman that I know could throw down if needed.

Laws that say that the man is always at fault in domestic violence cases are regressive and do nothing to address the root cause of domestic violence, a real problem for men and women everywhere. All it does is perpetuate the idea that women are fundamentally weaker than men.

It's true that domestic violence is sometimes initiated by women. In those cases, both should be arrested, not just the man.
The physical consequences of a man hitting a woman are usually worse than a woman hitting a man (barring use of weapons), but the intent/actions of both individuals should be considered when it comes to charges.

I believe that in a personal argument you should never hit the other person, and you should "turn the other cheek" if that person hits you. Hitting back will only escalate the situation, and you'll probably end up doing something you regret. If a random stranger attacks me or someone I know, though, and there is no recourse, I will fight to defend myself and that person.
 
A good friend of mine is a police officer here in Toronto and says that 90% of the time in domestic violence reports both parties end up taking a trip to the station.
