Just Wondering...

I have a sempron 3100+, paired with a VNF3-250 motherboard.

I'm planning on buying some new RAM and OCing to around 2.3-2.5 range.

I used to have a 9800pro, which I was pretty happy with, although I always wished to play at 1600x1200.

My 9800pro isn't working correctly, when I use it my motheboard's ps/2 ports don't work, any I get artifacting in anything 3d. Some help on that would also be appreciated.

I'm getting new RAM/Graphics card for xmas, and I'm wondering what I should get for myself. I'm seriously considering the 6800 OC, which looks pretty decent all around. I'm also looking at the X800pro, for some reason I can't see myself getting a 6800GT, although I could if I can't get a cheap x800pro.

What I'm wondering is if I'll really feel the $150 dollar difference that much while playing games. Anyone own both a 6800, and a GT? It'd be cool to play games at 1600x1200, but I don't know if that's worth $150 over 1280x1024.

Hi LOLWTFBBaCUE

Firstly, this will serve as a free bump for you since I don't have either of those cards and so can't comment on your primary request.

As far as whether it's worth $150 to play @ 16 x 12 vs 12 x 10, up until recently I was playing games on a 22" monitor. Now I'm stuck with a spare that's only 17". IMHO, 16 x 12 is pretty much unneccessary on a 17", but made things look better on the large monitor. So, my feeling is if you have a smaller monitor no, maybe yes if you've got a big monitor. Anyway, it all mostly personal preference.

I have owned a 9800pro, 6800, 6800GT. I sold both 6800 cards and kept the 9800pro.

I play all my games on high at 1024x768 and game depending, 4x AA

For me it wasn't worth it. But if you have a very large monitor then go for it. Otherwise I wouldn't.

I am running an 3200+ @2250 on a vnf3-250; I recently upgraded from a 9800 pro to a BFG 6800GT OC. I have a Mitsu Diamondton 22" monitor. I play some games a 16x12, others at 12x10. Personally, I am impressed with the difference and would not want to go back to lower res/lower quality eye candy. Many times while playing HL2, CS:S, and Doom3, I have caught myself saying, "Wow..." basically be awed by the image quality -- very immersive. If you have a smaller monitor, then I do not think it makes much sense to run hi-res, but if you large screen, I'd say it is worth it.

Cheers,
DJM

I have a 21" monitor and just upgraded from a 4400 to a 6800 OC. I say go for the 6800 GT and use AA. I never knew what I was missing before. Now I use AA on every game and love it.

I recently built a new comp with the BFG 6800GT OC, my old one had a 440mx. After playing games on 12x10, 4xAA and maxed AF, (my 17" monitor doesn't support 16x12), I have to say that I can't go back to playing in 6x3 or 8x6. I hate seeing pixelated figures, textures, and big menus. But seriously, 12x10 is big enough, so if your monitor is only 12x10 with lower AA and AFs, get a 6800. If it goes any higher, get the GT and go for 16x12.

Unless you're like me, get the GT anyway, play in 12x10 and max everything you can.
