Just wondering why so many Democrats support Omar despite the controversy.

Anti-anti-Semitism seems to have become a fashionable cover-story for racism. See also Tommy Robinson visiting Israel.

This really can't be repeated enough...especially because you know that the very people that argue this, wish only to bathe in the blood of dead jews, if only so that their christ can return.

Christian Republicans are the very worst people that humanity has shit upon the earth.

Question

Just wondering why so many Democrats support Omar despite the controversy?

“They put us in photos when they want to show our party is diverse,” Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan and the only other Muslim woman in Congress, wrote on Twitter, responding to someone who complained about Ms. Omar’s “lack of support” from the Democratic leadership. “However, when we ask to be at the table, or speak up about issues that impact who we are, what we fight for & why we ran in the first place, we are ignored. To truly honor our diversity is to never silence us.”

Just another check box in the identity politics of the current Democrat party and a political tool against Trump and friends, that is they gloss over her comments like republicans do for Trump.

Go suck trumps dick on some other forum that will appreciate your skill.

Second time in successive days with this . . . metaphor. Too much. With great latitude comes great responsibility. Find a better way to express your contempt, please.

There isn't any controversy about her. Just the bullshit that the right wing drums up and a few democrats don't catch themselves from falling for. The main controversy I've seen is Trump trying to stir up violence against her from his base. But the right supports Trump's and his deplorables' violence and the not enough of the left is willing to call out his race-based dogwhistling.

That’s certainly true. Topics can’t be discussed without it somehow being tied to him. Trump has somehow become them, look at the threads on this board. I’ve never seen a group of people so hyper focused and laying blame lazily laying blame of all of societies ills on a single person. Trump has permeated this nation like nothing I’ve ever seen.

This is such an epic level of (deliberate?) misunderstanding that it makes me cringe to think you might actually believe this.

Almost anyone on this board will tell you that Trump isn't the root of the problems in the US. He is 'merely' a symptom of the Republican's growing extremism and 'party over country' politics over the last few decades. However he is still a major problem himself in that he then reinforces that descent into extremism and ignorance by legitimizing it, in addition to the day to day fuckups that damage the country.

However just because Trump isn't the root of the issue, that doesn't mean that he shouldn't be a priority. The quicker and more comprehensively his influence is removed the easier it will be to go back to the normality and common sense that the "left" (which to modern day republicans is the center-right, centrists, moderate left and extreme left) want.

He’s not wrong though.
No, he is absolutely wrong. I have already provided the correct reason twice in this thread.

The reality is the Republicans playing identity politics here. Omar criticized a government, not a people. Republicans chose to spin it to identity, and falsely claim she attacked a people.
And the reason Republicans did this is because of the inherently conservative belief that every people should live in their own country. Thus the conservative support of Zionism (because in their belief, Jews should live in Israel), and their hatred for a Congressperson that, in conservatives' opinion, shouldn't even be living in America, much less be elected to Congress.
And what's the basis for the Republican support of ethnostatism? Identity politics.

I think both the controversy against and the defense of her are largely manufactured politicking. The real issue here is that we aren't willing to have serious talks about our relationship with Israel.

Modern Conservatism is all about a feared and hated enemy (see: PC culture, students, socialists, elites), and seems like they have decided that mutual hatred of muslism trumps (hah!) any ..uhm, "issues" the evangelicals have with jews.

I guess Hitler was not the root of the problem for Nazi Germany either huh?

In my mind, she is the polar opposite of Trump. I want nothing to do with either one of them. She is no better. I want a sane, thoughtful politician, not an emotional erratic basket case.

I guess Hitler was not the root of the problem for Nazi Germany either huh?

Maybe, maybe not. Historians have argued quite a bit about that. Seems as if the most common view is that Hitler was a vital ingredient for the Holocaust to happen, but I don't think one could argue he was sufficient on his own - seems quite obvious other factors had to be present as well. And Germany would still probably have ended up in a bad place even without Adolf himself, just maybe without that particular step to genocide.

Do problems even have a single 'root'?

I guess Hitler was not the root of the problem for Nazi Germany either huh?
Correct. Without the devastation of WW1 (economic, political, cultural, social, etc) and other factors you wouldn't have had the circumstances for him to succeed. Unfortunately, he had various qualities that allowed him to exacerbate the problems of the day.

The dems do seem to apologize for Omar, but thats the old establishment problem not Ilhan Omar problem.
All of these new democrats elected to congress are the future of America.
Not only the future for democrats but the future for republicans as well.
It would be nice if republicans looked around and took notice while there is still time.
Republicans are stuck in that old anti-gay, anti progressive, old fat white men dilemma.
Trump's supporters, all of them, are part of that old white fat men establishment.
Trump supporters as well as Trump himself offer nothing new. They don't realize it but they are the endangered species.
They actually believe a country built on immigration and immigrants can regress backwards. They demonize America for what America was built on.
Nada ever going to succeed.
They still believe gay people are their number one problem. Funny how republicans can remain stuck in the 1950's.
So strange....
Sorry Charlie, America is way past that bigoted thinking.
Progression will take over and those Trump republicans will fade away along with their bigoted out dated ideas.
What made America great was immigration going back to George Washington.
They say make America great again, where "again" as they define it never actually existed.
Now for democrats, if democrats can only convince Nancy Pelosi to take a hike, the party will be saved.
And republicans have a challenge as well. To get old Chuck Grassley and old Mitch McConnell to also take a hike.
And just maybe republicans can save themselves.
But I don't see that happening. Not while Donald Trump is in charge.
It would be so easy to defeat Donald Trump if these new democrats were allowed their chance.
While Donald would be busy ranting about walls and collusion, Donald would find himself defeated by one of these new democrats.
And wonder what the hell happened?
If that old out of touch DNC establishment would stand back and stop causing problems and let these new democrats take the helm then defeating Donald Trump in 2020 would be a cake walk.

Ilhan Omar is Somalian-American, with English as a second language. This explains her clumsiness in speaking of "some people . . . did some thing". She's right to be pissed off at the backlash against Muslims after 9/11. Everybody, excluding the Bible-thumpers and their obsession with the Holy Land, should be pissed off at Netanyahu's hardline position regarding the Palestinians, the Golan Heights, and Gaza. Nobody has their hands clean in all of this.

The reason the GOP-Trumpists have gone after Omar is simple. She's slapping back at Trump's xenophobic use of Muslims, the myth of the terror threat and other aspects, to whip up his Base through Fear. Her reaction makes them uncomfortable. She has called them out.

Inexperienced with indications of being too much a firebrand, just like AOC. I like them both. As a former Republican, let me take this opportunity to add my own COPD spit to the volley directed back at them.

Eventually, history will prove that they were on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of the human race. Mark my words. It's just a matter of time -- short or long as it may be.

The reason people are "attacking" Omar is because she is an anti-semite with very close relations with terrorists and hate groups.
