I just won a new mountain bike, and I don't know anything about it.

For all of you mountain bikers, is Trek a good brand, or did I just win crap on wheels?

It looks really nice, but I know aesthetics don't really say much about bikes.

EDIT: It's a Trek 3500 and it looks like this for anyone interested.

Trek is tricky..some of their lower end models are crap while there higher end arent that bad...

Sorry, I actually don't know the model# yet. Dad gave me a call and said it just got sent in the mail. I had to choose from a number of gifts including a digital camera, expensive watches, etc. So I think the bike is supposed to be a high-end model. But, I'm a bike noob really, so I wanted others thoughts.

Trek makes good bikes. Their lower end bikes are still good, they just aren't intended for the hardcore mountain biker. For the casual / weekend trail or MTB trail rider, they are really good.

Lance rides Trek. 🙂

Whats an MTB trail? Cool, I didn't know Lance rides Trek, I hope its a descent model, otherwise I'll probably sell it to put more towards the new truck I'm buying in March.

MTB = mountain bike. So its a trail designed for mountain bikes. Means its relatively smooth, no huge jumps/boulders/etc.

umm... The North Shore. Vancouver, British Columbia. That place is the mecca of mountain biking.

My brother and I both have Treks, they're awesome

Honestly, I don't care if it's some of their lower end crap, it's leagues above anything cheaper than it.

I used to have walmart, target, toysrus, etc. bikes with a full suspension and everything, but those are just crap. Personally, I think treks are great

mountain bikes => get what you pay for in hte sub $1500 range which I'm sure that bike is.

low end treks are heavier version of high end treks

High end treks just have better components, which are usually bettter due to reduced weight. High end treks have lighter frames,. Etc, etc etc

It's an OK entry level bike for cruising around on, but it's not a high-end bike. It's actually thier lowest model aluminum bike. Here's all the bikes they put in the same category.

And here's the rest of thier hardtail mountain bikes.

Yeah, that sux. I was hoping it would be a little better quality. My feeling is if you're going to own something, you should own the best. I dunno, I'll see how I like it and decide whether I'm gonna keep it. I haven't ridden a bike in years.

Own the best? Prepared to spend more on a bike then your truck?

Seriously, "the best" mountain bikes will run you more than $5k.... and a $5k bike isn't really all that much better than a $2k bike. Of course, there's a significant difference between a $200 bike and a $2000 bike.
