Just when you thought there was no hope for Detroit

For as long as I can remember the politics in Detroit has basically been most prominently about who could be the most radical black populist, thumbing their nose at the suburbs, and giving the biggest promises. Detroit recently went through the debacle of the Hip Hop mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and I'm sure you've all seen outright racism displayed by the City Council's Monica Conyers.

The first sign of hope was the election of Dave Bing, former NBA player and very successful no nonsense businessman. Now yesterday, the voters of Detroit cast most of their votes in the primary election for City Council for Charles Pugh an openly gay former newsman. A man I've always thought of as a man of integrity.

This is so out of character for the city of Detroit, I'd thought I'd share.

Sounds like politics in Memphis. I've been to few places in the US with worse racial divide/tension. This does seem to be a step in the right direction for Detroit.

If you tried to count the ways Detroit sucks you'd run out of numbers.

The entire city has no major grocery store. haha, I don't know why they don't just go around the city in busses rounding people up, take them out of there, and scorched-earth the whole thing.

Put the crack pipe down.

Go to maps.google.com and type in Detroit, michigan.

Then type in Farmer Jack. Then Meijer. Then Walmart. Then Kroger.

Newsflash. There's grocery stores everywhere, probably 25 of them within a 10 mile radius, and all of them within the city of Detroit.

Now maybe if that hack writer who wrote that article was implying that poor people without cars can't go the 5 miles it takes to get to their local grocery store, he was right. But his bullshit about whether or not there are grocery stores there is total f'n crap.

I live just North of Detroit, and lived IN Detroit for 18 years.

Gee, why don't we talk about how the sports fans burn down the town too.

That is a testament to the bad business climate Detroit has had for many years, but understand that the city itself is rather small (approx 10 mi. X 10 mi.) as opposed to the Metro area, where ever that ends (maybe 50 mi. X 30 mi.), so anyone seeking groceries has a 15 minute drive at most to a major chain.

Of all the ways P&N can offend, you latch on to grocery stores?

Best looking political situation Detroit has had since Archer was in office.

Hopefully we will get some folks in office who will work with each other and with the suburbs to improve the city and the surrounding areas.

I still have some heartburn as to whether the best candidates will make it as these are the same voters who put Kwame back in office even after all the stories of his questionable and unethical behavior.

Detroit, the nation's beleaguered 11th largest city, where there are no chain grocery store outlets within the city limits.

I did google. I don't know what defines city limits as I see plenty of krogers there, but I've seen the no grocery in detroit article kicking around for at least a week.

If we can just destroy Obama and his goal to save America, all us assholes will be glad Detroit exists. It will be the only place we can afford to live.

Hmmm, Farmer Jack has been out of business for years.

Hey, I just tried;

Meijer - none in Detroit

Walmart - none in Detroit

Kroger - Google shows one store, but it has been requested to remove it (no such place).

What up bro?

Amazing buildings? Detroit has the most pathetic downtown of any U.S. city for its size. What "amazing buildings" are you referring to? If you want to see good architecture and skyscrapers, I recommend Chicago.

most of the Farmer Jacks have closed down. Walmart and Meijer and such are OUTSIDE of Detroit city limits.
