maybe it's just cuz i watched it w/o sound, but honestly i don't think sound should have any influence on what i think a game looks like.

I kind of know what you're saying. I think I've been desensitized or something because those graphics aren't very impressive anymore. I don't know.

But you'll pee your pants when you play HL2 or Doom3 on a 19" monitor at 1280x1024 🙂 I know I will this September when I finally get my new computer built... mmm... dual Athlon 64's...

But part of the whole experience that made Doom and Doom2 so great was the sound.
 
HL2 pnws!

The peeps at Valve know it's all about game play and AI.

Carmack, id, and his buddies at nVidia are just trying to push new videocard sales by pumping up the eye candy to extreme levels.
 
I don't think its all hype...prolly will still be a great game. I just think it pales in comparison to what I saw in the HL2 trailer last night. Superior graphics do not make a better game (and the jury is still out on whether Doom3 even has better gfx than HL2...)
 
ID hasn't put out a good game in years. They are good programmers. They make good engines, but their games have sucked for a long time. They are a company best suited to licensing their engines because their games are so empty as to be painful.
 
I didn't think it looked as good as I first imagined either. I mean, it still looks awesome, but it didn't wow me like the vids for HL2 did. Now that looked awesome!

Right now, I'm thinking Half-Life 2 is going to be the winnAr for the awards. Doom 3 is going to make a great initial showing but get most of its publicity through engine licensing (think of how many Q3-based games are out there), and Halo 2 is Xbox exclusive, so can't really compare. 😛

Edit - Oh yeah, and for listening to it without sound, you aren't qualified to pass judgement.

Yeah, ok. This is Doom 3. Doom is not a series of scientists running around with broken experiments. This is about hellspawn invading earth and such.
