TBH, I thought it wasn't that great a doc. I wanted to turn it off halfway through.

What message is it trying to convey, or inform the user of? It's shitty to be a soldier and you might get shot and killed? Our soldiers are tough and endure?

Nothing terribly insightful or eye opening.

So you need the director to script some sort of message for you?

No thanks. I prefer to just see how it is, and draw my own conclusions.

Uh, the purpose of any form of media is to convey some sort of opinion, isn't it? Then you can "draw your own conclusions" regarding that opinion, correct? This doesnt have to be a "message," but can be conveyed in every aspect of the media, from dialog, to camera positioning, etc.

Restrepo is raw combat footage put together with some voiceover. It might have value to some, but I didn't find it particularly insightful, nor did I go, "Oh, so that's how it's like over there."

I don't need someone's opinion shoved down my throat. With war documentaries/movies, usually it is some liberal idiot trying to make Americans feel bad for their foriegn policy.

I thought this was refreshing.

You're correct, in Vietnam we simply cleared entire areas of the planet with B-52 drops. Granted, the main focus of those drops was the military use of the Ho Chi Minh trail and others, but I'm certain we knew that women and children were helping transport equipment on the route and we just didn't give a fuck.
And seeing as that worked out so well, why not try it again?

If you're not satisfied with the content of some film or have opinions so different as to not be able to continue watching, you can choose to leave. No one's forcing you to watch some shit. In the end, at least you are aware of this opinion, whether you agree with it or not.

In that sense, I'm just disappointed at the lack of opinion. Maybe that makes Restrepo a proper documentary. Who knows. I didn't like it. My opinion, not yours.

FYI: National Geographic Channel will be airing "Inside the Green Berets" next Monday @ 1:00 PM. This is a great documentary detailing daily life at Firebase Cobra in south-central Afghanistan. I highly recommend watching this, access to Green Beret life and operations is not only eye opening, but rare as well.

This, RIP. Just read this, and thank him for the ability for people like me who have the utmost respect for people engaged in combat, and allow me to see what they go through, and understand, and really relate to them. He put his life in danger not so much for us, but for all of those other brave souls out there serving to protect me and my liberties, and for that, I thank him from the bottom of my heart, and all those who serve.

Drako posted this up a few posts. I read comments on that link that downplayed the need for him and other journalists to be there, risking their lives. Armchair chickenshits.

Noticed after the fact, mine is a different link, so I left it.

People seem to treat anyone involved in these politically controversial battles/wars/conflicts as if they are all the bad guys, regardless of the side they are on.

Hindsight is always 20/20, had we left Sadaam alone, who the hell knows what he may have done. Same if we had left Al Quaeda alone. Everyone thinks they know the correct course of action now, seeing as it hasn't gone "perfect," and has been drawn out far longer than expected.

But I respect every individual out there working to protect me and those people who choose to be dipshits at home on their computers, saying whatever ignorant BS they can spatter onto a comptuer screen, regardless if it was ultimately the "right" thing to do or not.

Fewer terrorists are a good thing in my mind, same with Sadaam not being in power. If the terrorists didn't have us to fight on a daily basis, who knows where they'd turn to, or how far out they could reach. If we left them alone and another tragedy happened, whose fault is it for not stopping them? Ours. If we try to stop them, and it doesn't go perfectly and the world doesn't be become a perfect place? Our fault again. I like the "better safe than sorry" approach in this case.

The fact of the matter is, these people are putting their lives on the line for me, get a (relatively) lousy paycheck, and many pay the ultimate price, and there's nothing I can do that will ever measure up to that, other than standing, fighting, and potentially dying beside them as their "brother."
