Just Watched "Red State" This Weekend

So yeah, I watched "Red State" this weekend on Netflix. What disturbing movie. Didn't realize this was a Kevin Smith film until afterwards but it does explain a lot. Is this what liberals really think of conservatives? So many stereotypes in this movie, its sickening.

Partisan hacks typically can only think in terms of simplistic stereotypes...this is the world they live in. And it's much, much easier to believe themselves to be a "good person" this way.

As if Clerks was trying to be anything but comedy? Kevin Smith used to make some pretty funny movies. He just needs to stick to comedies and stop diving into political/religious commentary in his movies. Dogma and now this steaming pile have lowered my opinion of him as a great director.

I sincerely doubt he cares what you think. Dogma was a great movie, and really funny; I would be interested to think what you thought Dogma's political commentary was.

Red State was explicitly a horror movie based around what Fred Phelps would be like if he went another step further. I assume you are not a supporter of Fred Phelps, so I don't really see what the problem is. It isn't making any comment on what churchgoers in general are like. I thought Red State's greatest offense was being a shitty movie, not that it was somehow mean to conservatives.

Anyways, back to my original point. Kevin Smith obviously makes farcical movies for a living. I don't know why you would take Red State to be a view of what he believes conservatives to be like any more than you would have taken Clerks to be indicative of what you believe he thinks the Quick Stop is like, other than that you are more sensitive to one.

Yes, I'm also not certain what the political commentary was against conservatives as well. It seemed to target the hypocrisy of certain extremists and was based around the horrors of being within their power.

You obviously fail to see the difference between this movie and Clerks. This was not trying to be funny, satirical, or facical. If you have ever seen an interview of Kevin Smith in regards to politics you would know he was serious here.

The guy is a looney liberal and whether or not he was making serious commentary is up to the viewer I guess.

I also watched it over the weekend and I agree with the above (not so much with the guns part). It was not about conservatives at all.

I don't fail to see the difference at all, you're the one who is overly sensitive here. If you think that Fred Phelps is representative of conservatives, then yes, he is talking about you. If you believe that HE thinks Fred Phelps is representative of conservatives, then yes, he is talking about you.

Since I don't believe either of those to be true, he's not talking about you. I'm sorry that you enjoyed the movies of a 'loony librul' so much before he made one that was tangently related to something you identify with.

I scratched my head wondering why I was seeing this thread in here. Then I read the original post, and I start doubting myself, "I... I thought 'Red State' was a horror film!? Is it really a documentary on them evil right wingers!?"

Yeah... I think this post belongs in Off Topic where I will get much more delight out of the responses. :twisted:

Oh, and more on topic... I haven't seen the movie, but I've been meaning to. Is it worth watching? I'm not really much of a horror buff, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Do Jay and Silent Bob make a cameo? 😀

No Jay or Silent Bob. I thought the movie was neither particularly scary or particularly exciting. Just a run of the mill, modestly crappy horror movie.

I failed to see how this movie could be classified as a horror flick. The violence is nothing more than you would see in any other drama, action, suspense movie. Anyone who doesn't see the political undertones in this movie is not being honest with themselves.

I think that it's important to keep in mind that using an exaggerated situation is... well, I guess you could call it a writing technique. The biggest problem when it comes to writing a story is how you pull in the viewer, and try to get them interested in the movie. If this movie is about an even nuttier version of the Westboro guy, then given how I don't think anyone (but his own family) likes him, it allows the viewer to immediately make that distasteful association.

All in all, I don't think it's meant to be a knock against everyone "to the right of the line", but is probably meant to be a metaphorical backhand to those nut-jobs. I think given the news lately, nut-jobs exist on both sides of the line. 🙂
