Just got back from a showing this afternoon of Adam Sandler's 50 First Dates, and I must say I really really enjoyed this one. Definitely one of my favorite Sandler movies of all time now.
The basic gist of the story is that Sandler's character is this guy who normally takes advantage of tourists to Hawaii islands, basically because there is no commitment, just fun. However, he meets this girl, played by Drew Barrymore, and is pretty much intrigued by her. Of course, he later finds out that she was in an auto accident nearly a year before, and cannot keep her short term memory. So basically, she remembers everything before the wreck, but every night she loses her memory of what happened the day before. She keeps living the same day over and over, and Sandler is tasked with making her fall in love with him day after day.
The movie is pretty damn funny, but as usual, it's up to Sandler's cast of usual characters to provide the laughs instead of Sandler himself. This works to the movie's advantage I think. Also, the movie gets a little sappy towards the end, which was unexpected, but the movie leading up to it is good enough to warrant finishing it out
. The biggest suprise of the movie? Sean Astin's character, which was basically hilarious stuff everytime he was on the screen. He played the brother of Barrymore's character, a steriod using, lisp "tough" guy. I use the word tough very loosely
.
This is all my opinion, so YMMV. Did anyone else watch this, and what did you think?
