Just watched "2001: a space odyssey" for the first time. What just happened?

I rented it tonight because I have heard so much about it and I decided I would like to evaluate it for myself.

Stated simply" this movie threw me for a loop. I honestly have little clue what was going on the whole time. Especially the ending - what was happening with all the colors, etc.?

Could somebody who has a better grasp on the movie try to give me a clue to what the plot is? Or if the plot isnt the important thing, what is?

Thanks for any help!

<< Read all four books and you will have a better idea of what is going on. >>

Are they worth the read?

Why read when we can have someone who understands simply be nice and tell us?

(BTW, I'm a little confused as well)

Isn't it nice to have movies where they don't explain everything? Where you have to think for yourself? Yep, the ending is a bit weird, but I like that movie!

Are we asking about every goddamn movie on the goddamn market? No. It's one goddamn movie out of the whole goddamn lot. Give us a goddamn clue already goddamn you!

I love the beginning of that movie, with the monkeys hitting each other with sticks...kinda reminds me of high school.

I love that movie, too. Great soundtrack and it really forces you to think.

Movie was good but the book was better and is a light read. Well worth the two days that it took to read it. It will also help if you watch 2010. More pieces will fall in place then.

when the movie first came out it was, like most of Kubrick's films, bashed by critics and the public.
Only later people started realizing what a great movie it was.
For me, I liked all the scenes that showed how future space life might be...those were awesome

here's Ebert's review:
