Just wanted to verify that this CPU is dead...

this looks like a hell lot of thermal compound there...that much it seven splattered out underneath the CPU and splattered on the PCB....much luck with the RMA 🙂

lol Oh yeah...

I just got so frustrated because I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I re-applied the freakin thermal paste and re-sat the CPU 5 times. I tried the normal amount of AS5, then kept adding more and more (taking the previous coat off each time).

What chewed up the substrate like that so you have the underlying copper layers exposed? I dunno but that looks like physical damage as in someone screwed up. I highly doubt that would qualify for an RMA. RMA is for defective parts. Unless it came to you that way looks like you will be eating that one. Again how did you manage to chew it up like that? I don't think you killed it with to much thermal compound.

I used a Speeze heatsink, it was the first time I've used one... I got a screwdriver that was a little bit (or a lot) too small for the bracket. It went right through the hole and I didn't even notice I was scratching it until it was too late.

Edit: I know I'm a dumbass, no need to say so to my face. ;P

Well then that is your error I can almost guarantee they won't RMA it with that damage. Where did you buy it?

NewEgg

I've heard of people having their CPUs which they broke pins off of replaced, so I figure I can at least try my luck with this.

I would never say that. Crap happens so to speak. I've seen some pretty experienced guys do similar things. Expensive lesson though

I've heard they have done RMA's for similar problems but i wouldn't count on it. Seems they started tightening up on stuff like that. Still you have nothing to lose but shipping if they say no.

Well luckily I was getting paid 50$ to build this computer, so I'm still in the hole about $30 but I've learned some valuable stuff...

If you even try to RMA this thing you are a complete and utter fool, first of all for fecking it up like that and second of all for sending a part back that YOU MESSED UP!!!!
