A friend just got the toyota prius link

All I can say is WHY is the US auto industry not in front on this?
Why did my friend have to drive 600 miles to get one, made by toyota, and not Ford or GM or "some" US auto maker???

The take holds 12 gallons. They filled up and drove the 600 miles back and still had plenty of gas in the tank. This car is just so nice. Its a crying shame US auto makers rather lay off auto workers because the industry will not change and give the people what they want. Really sad, but the car is great!

Check out the inside 360 view on their site...WOW

Why? Because you'd have to be a retard or a hippie or someone who cares only about appearances to buy a Prius.

Pretty ironic that your friend drove 1200 miles round trip to get one. So much for saving gas.

Ford makes a hybrid escape... In any case, hybrids aren't really cost effective at this moment, it takes over 100K miles to break even on the investment.

That sh!tty website resized my browser window. If you're going to do that, do it in a pop-up. I'm still trying to find the fuel economy ratings.

Edit: 60 mpg? You could probably get darn near that in a Ford Festiva or a Geo Metro

Your friend drove 1200 miles to buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle, which he will have to drive well over 100k miles before he makes back the $7-8k extra he paid over a Civic.

Consumerism stupidity at its finest.

Funny how every other company has to deal with unions and much stronger unions ones at that. In Germany, a nation of 80m people, IG Metall has 2.4m members. In the US (pop 300m), the UAW has 500 000 members.

But hey, scapegoats are fun. After all, they save you from all that dreadful thinking you'd have to do otherwise...

Your friend drove 20 hours to spend thousands more dollars on a car that is only worth it after 100,000 miles (7-8 years) of driving?

I just want to cry too.

Does the 7-8 year stat include the time value of money?

I fail to see how $22k is expensive for a hybrid, considering they used to run way more than that. Lots of new cars with good gas mileage run $20k+, the ones at $14k tend to really skimp on power and features.

Plus, most people who'd go for the "money saving" aspect would probably drive it well past 100k miles, I don't think I've ever had a car that didn't make it to that point at least.

It's not the just 'because of the unions' It's the legacy costs and more than anything else, it's healthcare costs. Yes the companies were bloated and these cuts were needed years ago, but the health care expenses are murdering GM/Ford/DCX.

Because they know that not everyone is willing to sacrifice HP for fuel economy. I'd sooner drive a 300+ hp car that gets 20mpg over a ~100hp car that gets 60mpg.

as you know.. for many on AT, a car that can have some fun (and has soul) counts for something, not just straight MPG;)

the industry isn't laying off people due to quality concerns, their legacy costs are through the roof. The unions were short sighted in their demands, and now they're killing the golden goose

Also OP, I'd rather have no car at all then buy a Japanese one.

The Prius costs about 10K more than it should and is essentially a status symbol. Good luck to your friend when his Prius breaks down 600 miles from a Toyota dealership and nobody nearby can fix it.
