Just visited a TMO store in San Mateo, CA...

I am out here on the West Coast for Xmas.

I have been a loyal TMO customer for nearly 10 years, but I haven't stepped into a TMO store in ages. I buy my unlocked phones from www.mobilecityonline.com and adjust my plan by web or phone.

So I wandered into the store today, hoping they might have the new Nokia phone they did not.

Anyway, I used my time to "play" with some of the phones. Now, I am FULLY AWARE that the phones on display are about 6-8 months old at the least. In other words, obsolete.

That said, I came away impressed by the T-Mobile (LG) G2X with Google phone. Very snappy with its dual-core Tegra CPU/GPU.

Since getting home, I did some Googling and found that it is of course not without its faults.

Can anyone tell me what the the ideal modern successor phone is or will be?

Also, while I was thinking the Galaxy Nexus would be ideal for me, I think its form factor might be on the TOO LARGE side.

Anyway, those are my thoughts/questions.

the g2x was the last "G" series/stock google phone from tmobile, at least so far. so in that sense, there's no direct successor.

however the galaxy S II and HTC amaze are both dual core powerhouses on tmobile.

of course, galaxy nexus also works on t-mobile. if you buy unlocked, there's no reason not to get it unless your hands are tiny. I can't palm a basketball but i can use the GN just fine.

i got mine from mobilecityonline too!

The NitroHD is LGs latest android phone. Not exactly a direct successor of the G2x. The NitroHD also has poor battery life due to its LTE. I'd get the Amaze of Galaxy S2 on T-mobile. I don't think you will find many/any 4" android superphones now, most new phones are going to be 4.3-4.5.

Yes the G2x is full of bugs and people were getting rid of them like crazy. It took them forever to release an update to address the bugs (Gingerbread), but I am not sure if that fixed all of the bugs. Some of the quality issues were with the screen bleeding.

That said, the G2x is coming to Straight Talk soon. They are possibly unveiling new plans and the G2x. It will probably be using the T-Mobile network, just re-sold through Straight Talk.

I'd suggest trying out the Galaxy Nexus at a Verizon store just to get a feel for the size (and keep in mind the GSM version is slightly thinner than Verizon's version). My Galaxy Nexus actually feels noticeably smaller than my old Evo 4G in my pocket because it's thinner and lighter. Also keep in mind that the big screen includes the area at the bottom for the buttons, rather than using capacitive buttons.

If you decide against the Nexus, the GS2 is the next best thing. Although at this point you may just want to wait for CES in January and see what's coming. 2012 will be all about 720p and Ice Cream Sandwich. Doesn't make much sense to buy a Gingerbread phone right now IMO.

Thanks for the tip to step into a Verizon store. Will do that.

I have decided that if I buy Android, it must be a Google/Nexus phone.

I am still keeping the Nokia/Mango option on the table as well.

The G2X is kind of buggy, but otherwise a good phone. I put Cyanogenmod on mine and it improved significantly.
