Due to unresolvable S1854 problem (random dumps back to desktop)I finally switched my motherboard to P3V4X. So far my problem seems to be solved, as I ran 3dmark2000 'bout 5 times and played some games and not 1 kick-out..YET!! I did the switch without re-installing windows98...it took about 5 re-boots but eventually things worked themselves out and my system is stable(very big surprise for me!!)though I backed eveything up preparing for the worst.
QUESTION: I have a free IRQ #12 which I want to put my Voodoo card on but Windows won't let me change ANY IRQ's. I uncheck "automatic settings" but then get the error message "this resource setting cannot be modified". Is this the ASUS board stopping me? Any ideas?
Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here...

I did the same MOBO switch that you did (Tyan Board Fried on me) without reinstalling win 98 also. I'd recommend that you re-install the VIA 4 in 1 drivers though.

I'm at work right now, so I don't have my Asus book in front of me right now. Look up in you MoBo book what IRQ 12 is for -- it may be a USB IRQ (which has a seperate place in the BIOS to free up).

What kind of voodoo card you talking about? I assume you already have your main video card in the AGP or a PCI slot. If you want to put a Voodoo 2 in it, go ahead - V2's do not use an IRQ. If you want to replace your current video card with a PCI voodoo 3, just do it -- if your old card was a PCI, use the same slot; if it was a AGP, put the PCI voodoo in PCI slot 1 or 2 & then move your other cards around till you find the slots that make everything happy.

If you have an AGP Voodoo card you want to put in, the AGP slot has its own IRQ.

IF you post what all your components are you can get more detailed info.

Quote from the manual.

The default of [Auto] allows the system to detect a PS/2 mouse on startup. If detected, IRQ12 will be used for the PS/2 mouse. IRQ12 will be reserved for expansion cards only if a PS/2 mouse is not detected. [Enabled] will always reserve IRQ12, whether on startup a PS/2 mouse is detected or not.

Just set the PS/2 Mouse Function Control in the BIOS to [Enabled].

Pentium II 733
(2) Maxtor 7200 HD (master/slave)
8X I/0 Magic DVD
Iomega Zip CD-RW
SoundBlaster Live MP3+
Netgear Ethernet
1 SCSI adaptor card in ISA slot
Voodoo5 5500
Zip 100 (on parallel)
USB Intellimouse Optical (no PS/2 used)

IRQ's:
0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Communications Port (COM2)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 Creative SB16 Emulation
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 ECP Printer port (LP1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus

10 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
10 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
10 3dfxVoodoo5
10 NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter
10 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

11 ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ Steering
11 Creative SB Live!

12 (free)
13 Numeric data processor

14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller

15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fio)
15 VIA bus Master PCI IDE Controller

Windows will not let me change any IRQ's...I want my Voodoo card outta the number 10 IRQ...look at all that crap on there...However, as it is everyting is so far working great..go figure..

Are there any knowledgable folk who can tell me what the PCI steering thing is and why do I have/need so many...I recall other systems I've had that only had one or 2 at most

I like this Asus board...boots quicker than the Tyan and generally seems much more responsive..not one Blue Screen yet...3dMark2000 scores are 'bout the same as the Tyan give or take a few points...

You will just have to shuffle the PCI cards around until you get an IRQ layout that satisfies you. Disable COM1 and/or COM2 in the BIOS to free up IRQ 3 and/or 4. Here's what I had loaded up onto my P3V4X:

AGP: CL Annihilator 2 (IRQ 11)
PCI slot 1: empty
PCI slot 2: NETGEAR FA-310TX NIC (IRQ 12)
PCI slot 3: SB Live! (IRQ 10)
PCI slot 4: Diamond SupraMAX v.90 Winmodem (IRQ 3)
PCI slot 5: Voodoo2 card (no IRQ)
PCI slot 6: empty
ISA slot: Sound Blaster 16 (IRQ 5)

The winmodem had to share an IRQ with the onboard USB controller but that was it, everything else on its own IRQ as you can see. I think you can get what you're looking for, just move stuff around.

You could also disable ACPI in BIOS if you don't leave your system on all the time. It will free a IRQ up too.

14 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller

that is my IRQ assignments, no problems at all.

Assigning a device on IRQ 12 thru the bios will hang the P3V4X when it does its PnP initialization

Don't worry about it if everything is working fine! :)

Those days fo IRQ conflicts are pretty much over.
