Jan Jansen in your team is a must. He has so many crazy stories and interacts in such a funny way with everybody, you'll loose a lot by not taking him along. Maaan, I still laugh when I remember those dialogs between Jan and Minsc or Viconia haha Too bad I don't have time to replay the game now, perhaps in December...

Baldur's Gate 2 was awesome. I thought BG1 was a bit average to be honest. But BG2 is a masterpiece. That era was great for role players. BG2, Planescape Torment, Fallouts, Icewind, Might and Magic Games....good times. Damn good times.

Other than the Widescreen mod if I am just looking to play BG2 + TOB are there any *necessary* mods?

edwin > jan for the purpose of magecraft.

jan > edwin if you need a mage and a thief, but don't want to give anyone else up.

I was lucky enough to find a copy of both the original Baldur's Gate and the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion at my local store, both used copies of course, and there's no retail box for the expansion, just the CD-Rom inside a generic CD box, but at least I have the full retail stuff for the original, and I only paid $14 for both. What's most unfortunate however is that I couldn't find Baldur's Gate II nor its expansion, so I'll have to order it on-line maybe from e-Bay, I'm not sure. There's still one store I can go check tomorrow (well I'll just call them before going of course).

I've installed the whole thing already and patched them both (original and expansion), but I won't touch them until I get BGII + ToB and then I'll install the TuTu mod which I just finished downloading, along with a Spawn Randomizer. But I have a question about Baldur's Gate and BGII. If I want to play the original Baldur's Gate, then do I need to play that and not touch the expansion? And is it the same for BGII? For example, if I play Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, then I'll be playing all of the Acts from vanilla Diablo II, but then the content from the LoD expansion is just part of the whole thing and I don't have to switch between CD's. But what about Baldur's Gate and the sequel? For BGII for instance, do I just start Throne of Bhaal right away and I'll be playing what was in Shadows of Amn anyway? Or do I have to play SoA and ToB separately?

man, this brought back memory. One of the best RPG, with really interesting characters and interactions. Romance with girls and sleeping with them doesn't hurt too.....Go for the eyes boo....hahaha

It brings a bit of warmth to my heart when I see people picking up the BG series a decade after it debuted.

Damn it, I need to install it (along with a half dozen other games) now that I've pretty much got my Vista 64 install how I want it.

I've actually had this game for about 6 months but never got around to installing it because my 80GB HD was full. I just bought a 500GB so I finally had room.

TheVrolok, what is that "tutu" that you're talking about? I mean is there any official web site of that mod? If it really is that much worth it I think I'll also buy the original Baldur's Gate which I've never seen nor played at all.

TuTu is a mod that allows you to play BG1 using the more advanced BG2 engine.

The only downside to the BG series is its 2D nature. If you're playing it on a 24in WS LCD, then the game is horribly stretched and the text very difficult to read. If you can get the widescreen mod to work, then you end up with a gorgeous game world, and itty bitty text.

God, I hope EA doesn't fvck up Dragon Age.

actually, someone created a WS mod for BG2 that's supposed to work really well.

http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/

Yep, definitely check out the WS mod and don't forget to disable triple buffering if you're seeing flickering/shimmering menus. Took me about 15 mins to figure it out, as it wasn't clearly documented on any of the source sites.

I've used the WS mod, it still makes the text almost microscopic at 1920x1200. The world is gorgeous though.

Also, I don't think I ever got the WS mod to work under Torment. I'll have to try again, that was an RPG for the ages.

do mobs respawn in this game like in Oblivion?

Some do, some don't, usually only if you rest in unsafe areas. Its not really needed to gain experience. BG2, unlike Oblivion, is a finely tuned, balanced game.

I didn't play part 1 but I read some back story on it so I wouldn't be confused. I'm not that far into it. Irenicus and Imoen just got taken away for the illegal magic use and I'm taking a break right now but it is really fun and pretty damn customizable. It's really fun so far and I hope the story get's really good. I have the expansion Throne of Bhaal so I have many hours of fun ahead of me. Oh and I didn't know what encumbered was and I thought the game glitched cus Imoen wouldn't move until I googled what it was and I was like DOH!!!

Enjoy! Baldur's Gate II is perhaps the greatest RPG of all time. You might also enjoy Planescape: Torment.

Check out Bioware's upcoming game called "Dragon Age". They are trying to recreate the essence of baldur's gate with it.

I did not know that. I'll have to check it out. Gosh...they'd need to bring back that engine and just make another game that's like Baldur's Gate. Most importantly, they need to allow pauses during battle and for you to be able to control all 6 (or hey, why not 8 or 10) party members.

Well good news, I just came back from a store with used copies of Baldur's Gate II and Throne of Bhaal. Now I need to patch those two and then I can finally start from the start that is, from Baldur's Gate TuTu. And I loved the Descent 3 demonstration movie, sounding all serious, and the narrator goes at the end "and now in 1999...", and looking at the graphics, very "PlayStation"-like, oh the memories... I was a fan of the Descent series, and they really had to put that on the Baldur's Gate's installation process.

Anyway, first of all, let's patch and install TuTu, I'll come back later to give my impressions on the original which I've never played nor even seen once. I played Shadows of Amn for some time, although I never beat it, and I never played nor saw Throne of Baal, and I don't remember anything from SoA anyways, so I've got lots to do. Any suggestions for a class to start with in the original?

I did human fighter in BG1 and then imported it into BG2 my very first play through.

I played both the original Baldur's Gate and the tutu version. The tutu version was amazingly well done and it brought out the beauty of Baldur's Gate using the Baldur's Gate 2's engine. One of the great thing about the game is that any class is viable. Straight fighter is a powerful class in its own right. But if you choose to dual class to a fighter-thief or fighter-mage later on, it's a lot of fun.

I bought the game in a Forgotten Realms collection a few months ago.

I remember playing through the first dungeon, being confused, getting my ass whopped, and then subsequently quitting.

It's a shame though. I know the rave the game gets, so I should really give it another chance soon.

One of the great things about BG2 was the interactions between NPCs. Some of the dialogue were hilarious. Jan Jansen, Minsc, and Khorgan (The dwarf not funny but just the replies adn responses he elicits from the other two), are musts if you want humorous banter.
