I just started playing Baldur's Gate 2 about 2 days ago and damn it is great so far. At first the UI was a little confusing but I got used to it very quickly. I didn't play part 1 but I read some back story on it so I wouldn't be confused. I'm not that far into it. Irenicus and Imoen just got taken away for the illegal magic use and I'm taking a break right now but it is really fun and pretty damn customizable. It's really fun so far and I hope the story get's really good. I have the expansion Throne of Bhaal so I have many hours of fun ahead of me. Oh and I didn't know what encumbered was and I thought the game glitched cus Imoen wouldn't move until I googled what it was and I was like DOH!!!

if you thought getting out of the dungeon was great... the game gets orders of magnitudes better. i won't spoil things for you so i'll say this - don't be afraid to explore places, but be prepared to get your ass kicked at any moment by anything, because it will happen at some point ;)

lots of great quests, party members, and other people you'll run into. it's utterly fantastic :)

edit: the spacebar is your friend.

I remember going to school late one day and taking the write-up so I could play BG2. That was almost 10 years ago. I still play this classic from time to time.

Definately one of the best rpgs ever. I was actually considering re-installing it myself.

Check out Bioware's upcoming game called "Dragon Age". They are trying to recreate the essence of baldur's gate with it.

Honestly, if you're still in the beginning of BG2 and haven't played BG1, I'd recommend picking it up and playing it first. You can grab BG TuTu and mod BG1 to play in the BG2 engine so the game will look/feel essentially the same but you'll get to play through the original story. And man oh man, it's worth it. Even if you've read the highlights you're missing out on a whole lot of depth by passing up the first game. BG2 will be far, far, more enjoyable if you go through BG1 first and get all the small mini-stories/character backstories, etc.

I've never played Throne of Bhaal, but I've played (although never completed) Shadows of Amn back in the days, it was my friend's copy and I used to play some times when I went to see him. I think it'd be nice to try and find a used copy or a brand new if it can be found. I remember liking the game a lot. I'm curious though, TheVrolok, what is that "tutu" that you're talking about? I mean is there any official web site of that mod? If it really is that much worth it I think I'll also buy the original Baldur's Gate which I've never seen nor played at all.

TuTu is a mod that allows you to play BG1 using the more advanced BG2 engine.

The only downside to the BG series is its 2D nature. If you're playing it on a 24in WS LCD, then the game is horribly stretched and the text very difficult to read. If you can get the widescreen mod to work, then you end up with a gorgeous game world, and itty bitty text.

God, I hope EA doesn't fvck up Dragon Age.

actually, someone created a WS mod for BG2 that's supposed to work really well.

Yep, really is a fantastic game. Great story, totally immersive world, excellent writing, fantastic voice acting. Not to mention how great some of the NPCs are; Minsc and Irenicus are easily two of the all-time great video game characters.

Haven't played it in years and have no idea where my old CDs are, may have to just buy the boxed set and play the whole series through. Been a while.

Yep, definitely check out the WS mod and don't forget to disable triple buffering if you're seeing flickering/shimmering menus. Took me about 15 mins to figure it out, as it wasn't clearly documented on any of the source sites.

am i the only one who found playing an evil party was easier than playing a good party?
i mean i took Viconia, Edwin and the dwarf fighter (forgot his name), myself as a thief and two other i think Arie and Anomen.
i made all the evil decisions which was really fun, i kept all the loot, i shoplifted every store until it was squeaky clean...the only setback was perhaps i had to load an early save so that the "good" characters Arie and Anomen won't ditch me because i was so eV0L.

Awesome thread, I'm going to go see about buying this game now.

Just look for the game pack in Schadenfroh's link. If you haven't played the games then it is, IMHO, probably one of the greatest bang-for-your-buck game packs ever to be created.

Saw the demo of this at PAX - I think anyone who liked BG series will definitely enjoy this game... :)

If only you played BG1... you'd be even more amazed. You have no idea how amazing it was to be given the oppurtunity to 'import' your save from the first game into the second.

Anyways, hope you enjoy it your first time through. Remember to explore everything. Also remember that this isn't Oblivion (;)), every house/enterable building/location actually has some meaning/story to it.

I'm embarrassed to admit I have yet to play through this game. My usual gripe with older titles is how they play @ 8x6, but thanks for the links to the WS mod.

Athkatla has a lot of places to explore. I try to play only for an hour but I get sucked into it and time flies. I can already tell this game is ganna be the end of my outside life. I guess this is how WOW people feel.

Except for the fact that there is actually a good story to be told here and the game will eventually end. And you only have to pay about $20 total to enjoy it all now.

Boo was truly a legend among miniature giant space hamsters. Plus, he squeaked when you clicked on him in Minsc's inventory. How cool was that?

I'm replaying this now myself. Even at normal difficulty it's much harder than newer games, and the magic battles require much more thought to win.

NWN 1-2 & KOTOR 1-2 were all a lot of fun, but easy by comparison.

Tip: Jan is a better thief than Yoshi for traps, locks & pickpocketing, plus he's a decent mage. Yoshi is better at backstabbing though ;)

My current party (about to start chapter 3):
Me - human, dual-class fighter 9 / mage 10
Core party: Minsc, Jaheira, Aerie, Jan -- just bought Aeria a girdle of giant strength so she no longer hits like a girl.

Guest slot (varies from quest to quest) - Kelgorn, Keldorn, Haer'dalis - still need to do Nalia's, Mazzy's and the planar sphere

First game I ever bought was Baldur's Gate I. It was in a brown cd 'envelope' with I think four cd's. Man, good old times for sure. The only thing I never rly got was the thiefing thing though. I don't know, but I was never rly good at doing stealth like stuff, backstabbing and the like. Perhaps I was a little to rash and not patient enough. With thatwwidescreen mod I could see myself playing this again. If it weren't for all those new games coming out soon...

I am still playing BG2, as I have been for the past month. BG2, plus it's expansion, has so much to do it's incredible.
