just so everyone knows...CD-RW Media can determine...

someone a long time ago told me that your software could not detect the media you are using. this person, however, was wrong. i bought 12x cds and tried to use them in a 24x burner. thanks very much whoever told me that...nero detected the cds were 12x and would only let me burn on 12x, not 24x. just thought id share with everyone incase someone else was going to run into the same problem in the near future.

Normally you're burner will only allow you to burnas fast as the media physically can, even though it might say it is trying to burn at 24x it wont, instead it burns at the maximum speed allowable for that media.

yeah i didnt know that until today. oh well, they say you learn through experience. i hope everyone learns from my mistake!

I've burned many, many 16x media at 24x. I'm speculating here but I'd guess there are a few variables involved, i.e., the quality of the media, brand of burner, software used to burn, etc.

How do you burn 16x at 24x? What buning software do you use that allows this? Is there a work-around or cheat for a burning program that allow you to do this?

I use Nero, CloneCD and Fireburner and all limit my burn speed to the value that is stated on the CDr/CDrw disk.

depending on your burner, if you open up nero, go into the recorders tab, select your recorder and hit the options button on the bottom, you might have a feature called "JustSpeed" enabled. Justspeed automaticly chooses the best speed for the media. You can disable this and burn slower cds in it, I've done it myself, but the burner will not kick into high speed until a bit farther into the disc (I believe it's 15 minutes of cd-time that it kicks up).

Hope this helps!

Well I have yet to buy 24X media and I currently use Pengo 16X, Memorex 16X and Imation 16X and allways burn at 24X through NERO. 700 meg CD takes 4:40 to burn that is ofcourse with Lead in and Lead out.

You say CDRW in the topic, a RW has it's speed coded into the disc and will not burn faster than it's rated

Some media may not be in the list that the burner will recognize properly so you can change the speed of the burning.
Sometimes other media that it doesn't recognize will be burnt at a set speed cause it might be poor media or what not, to ensure a safer burn.

Alot of software now can detect what type of media and the speed that it is rated at before you burn and it is locked in so that you can't adjust the speed to burn.

IE. can't raise the burn speed higher, you can always go lower.

What burner do you have? Disc either specifies maximum speed(rather rare) or drive locks the max speed down on a media you give it and Nero simply reports what drive has done.
