Yeah he should have called the guy, but he did not burn a bridge by e-mailing him. If the OP is good at his job, the method by which he resigned will impact nothing.

Maybe you live in a different world than me. I've seen this very thing happen and just sending an E-mail to resign is viewed in VERY poor taste. It basically says "I can't even give you common business courtesy". It goes so far that one is black listed for doing something like this. It shows a basic lack of communication skills. "So Jeff, you know John right? You worked together? Yeah, he resigned with an E-mail, didn't even talk to me...stay away from this guy."

People talk.

I was a weasel the first job I quit. I was there for 3 years, and knew a lot of people pretty well. It was a pretty small place, so it felt kinda like family. How'd I quit?

Well, I typed up a nice reference letter for my boss. Dropped it off after coming from work at my new place, then hauled ass.

I've seen people re-hired after resigning via e-mail, so clearly you're wrong. Yeah, it looks bad, but people care more about hiring someone who will get the job done than stupid shit like sending an e-mail instead of making a phone call.
