Maybe you live in a different world than me. I've seen this very thing happen and just sending an E-mail to resign is viewed in VERY poor taste. It basically says "I can't even give you common business courtesy". It goes so far that one is black listed for doing something like this. It shows a basic lack of communication skills. "So Jeff, you know John right? You worked together? Yeah, he resigned with an E-mail, didn't even talk to me...stay away from this guy."

Well, I typed up a nice reference letter for my boss. Dropped it off after coming from work at my new place, then hauled ass.
