Just saw The 13th Warrior and The Replacement Killers

Is it loosely based on Beowulf? There are names like Hrothgar and Wyglaff that come up.

Also, the movie wasn't that bad. The ending wasn't good at all though. I would've wanted to see more resolution. It wasn't as bad as everybody I know made it out to be. A good rental movie. 🙂

***EDIT***
Just finishes Replacement Killers. Pretty good movie, although not as good as Chow's older HK stuff. That big hispanic guy in there is cool though. Haha. He just seems cool with that long hair and that face. 🙂

book is better, i think it was called eaters of the dead. the movie was a total bomb. you should go to rottentomatoes.com b4 you watch something🙂 the movie was so bad they fired the first director and brought another one on to try ot fix it. it didn't really follow the book, the studio released it anyways, saw that it bombed and let it die.

Actually the movie is based on Crichton's book 'Eaters of the Dead' which was itself a retelling of Beowulf. Crichton wrote it as proof to a colleague that classical literature could be retold in such a way as to appeal to the modern audience. He combined that with the historical accounts of Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan to come up with the final story. Crichton has since distanced himself from the work, although I don't know for sure why.

It's one of my absolute favorite movies, although I'm not entirely certain why. The book was ok, but definately not one of his best. I'd be much more interested in getting ahold of the original histories as told by Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan.

Ahhh.. thanks! Beowulf is a good read for those who haven't read it (and who hasn't? 😀). I didn't think the movie was THAT bad. Enjoyable.

The 13th Warrior was based on the book Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. And, IMO, The 13th Warrior sucked @ss. There was no point. Antonio Banderas' character (the main character) was totally unneeded. Oh well...

<< movie wasn't that bad >>

hahahahahahaha, you dont watch many movies do you? hahaha, it was a HORRIBLE movie.. weak plot, TERRIBLE acting.. i laughed the entire time.. btw the special effects blew too.. beowolf was another crappy movie rental..

I think we need to just accept that tastes vary. There is no such thing as a 'good movie', or a 'bad movie' really, just movies we like or don't. I personally LOVE this movie, watch it every week or two. I liked it so much I've studied about it just to get more into it. I've seen thousands of movies; classics, foreign, modern, drama, romance, comedy, independant, anime...you name it. I love movies, and this movie I loved more than most. Many people didn't, and that's fine for them. I've seen many movies that win awards or that 90% of the population would slit their wrists to watch again, and fallen asleep or laughed at how terrible it was. *shrug* Reality is entirely personal, there is no right or wrong here. 😎

ok, i realize that opinion goes greatly into all media.. but this... this was HORRIBLE.. it wasnt even a real movie..

*shrug* like I said, I disagree. I thought the characters were wonderful, costuming decent (although not realistic), setting was about the best I've ever seen. I love the story, the idea of it (especially since it's based on an actual Arab storyteller who really met some norse warriors and learned from them).

I very much enjoyed the underlying motives and watching the exchange of learning. I completely think it's a wonderful movie. *shrug* Like I said, it's all only opinion.

i actually thought the storyline was interesting. but as mentioned already, the ending was horrible.

just my opinion 🙂

man, wish they showed more of that chic :Q

??? There was only one 'love scene' that I can remember...when Ahmed and his chic get it on after realizing they likely won't live another night...I don't see much that isn't plausible there.

I thought the movie was horrible.

I mean, were they the only people in the world? They'd send an army there..

The time I watched it was during my revisions, and I think with all the stress, it was kinda of a reliever. I tremendously enjoyed it 😉
I liked the way the Vikings were pictured.
