Ninja scroll is actually a very boring and a very bad anime flick. Ghost in the shell is very good, so is Akira.

But most of all

see

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Ghost In The Shell is the best Anime I have seen visually and the story is excellent as well, I personally preferred Vampire Hunter D fro stroyline but it was not as visually stunning as Ghost.

I'm with dabuddha see Ninja Scroll. Princess Mononoke is pretty good. I cant watch Akira without falling asleep(the anime is great though) If the remake of Vampire Hunter D is true to the original it should be real good too.

Check out some recent series translations as well, namely Trigun and Cowboy BeBop.

for those who havn't yet struggled through it, Lain is the best anime by far. It completely blows away everything i've seen. It will fsck with your mind for days to come.

Evangelion is my favorite series :) Go watch it.

Lain was weird... but good weird. It's not something I would recommend to introduce someone to anime though. What made it good for me was that it was SO different compared to standard anime.

Ghost in the Shell was excellent! Oh, for any of you anime experts, is the "Macross" series worth checking out?
I don't know if this would really classify as Anime, but does anyone remember watching "StarBlazers" (in Japan I think it was called Battleship Yamato) back in the early '80s?

Ghost in the Shell was 'okay', the animation was top shelf but the story was just okay.

I was more impressed with Ninja Scroll.

To me, a movie/anime you can watch again and again makes it good. I couldn't sit through Ghost again. I own Ninja Scroll on DVD and have already watched it about 3 times.

Yes, Lain will fsck with your head to say the least :) But you have to admire her ability to OC that Duron 600 to a nice 1.2 gigs (what do you think the water cooling was for?).

Another good series in that line of thought is Key the Metal Idol. Quote from AnimeOnDVD.com:

Originally released in the mid 90's and licensed by Viz, Key The Metal Idol has been compacted from it's VHS incarnation to it's DVD release, providing maximum value and maximum entertainment... providing you like shows similar to Serial Experiments Lain. This is pretty similar, though not as "warm and fuzzy" as one chat regular put it.

Anything that makes Lain look "warm and fuzzy" is good in my book :)

Then there's Grave of the Fireflies, which will make anything look warm and fuzzy.

Ninja Scroll was good animation, rather crappy story.

I actually found myself liking Tenchi Muyo, which was interesting considering I prefer the likes of Key and Lain. Just rented and watched Daughter of Darkness. The OAV, I'm sure, watches like a soap opera, if the interaction between Tenchi, Ryoko and that other girl are any indication.

In any case, you'll probably want to check out the subtitled versions of whatever you try. The dubs (English audio replacing the original Japanese) usually suck badly (the dub for Tenchi Muyo - Daugter of Darkness, for example, changes quite a bit of the story for no reason whatsoever.)

Golden Boy and love hina :)
oh another thing, get sub, not dub:p Dubs are generally inferior, and lose information in tranlation. In the case of goldenboy, its less funny.

When you see Wings of Honneimaise(I can't spell it for the life of me), not only will you enjoy the story line, the visuals will blow you away. Best damn looking anime I've ever seen. I've not seen many though. Just about 25-30 or so.

Czar, put down that crack pipe and get yourself together ....

Rendus, the story doesn't blow you away but it's far from being crappy. You have to watch it a couple of times to really get a feel for it. Better yet ... watch it in Japanese with English subtitles. It's slightly different and has a more Japanese feel to it, obviously .... but i'm talking not only about the intonation but the subtle differences which make it an almost different viewing.

Fav Movies (that I can remember):
1) Princess mononoke
2) Ghost in the shell
3) Ninja scroll
4) Spriggan (hey, it was ok)

I've watched more anime movies and series, but I can't remember them all.

My favorite series is Rurouni Kenshin. Berserk had a really nice story line too (try couple of eisodes, you'll be hoocked on it).

I don't like tenchi muyo that much. The reason is that I've seen a lot of those "single male living with multiple females" kind of animes. Or those high school animes (you know, the once with same story lines *cough* Utena (sp)*cough*)

Fav. tv series:
1) Rurouni Kenshin
2) DBZ/GT (heh... i know, but its pretty cool :))
3) Berserk
4) Ranma (for the wackey comedy)
5) Well, I might have said Escaflowne, but the TV series ruined it.

Anywway, i've seen so many animes... I don't know half their names (if you show me a clip, I'll remember it :)).

BTW - I'm trying to get grave of the fireflies, but can't find it. If anyone can hook me up with a copy, please PM me. :)

I never watch my anime dubbed. :) I just didn't like the "Kill him. Now kill him!" style.
