Please help. My guy is building his first system and I know he has done some research but I'm nervous that he doesn't have it all right. Also, it seems that he is spending a lot of money!
He already bought a 40 GG 7200 Maxtor drive and a cd player. He is planning to buy everything else from newegg.com tomorrow.
This is the list:

Enermax, FS-710B. BLACK, 10-Bay, Enermax 330W P-4 PS, Server Tower Case ATX. 4 X 5.25" Bays, 2 X 3.5" Bays, 4 X 3.5" Hidden. Enermax EG351P VE(2 BB Fans) (AMD Recommended power supply.) 3 Fans installed. Dimensions: W205*D473*H522 (mm). $99.00
MITSUMI D359M3 FDD 1.44MB 3.5INCH - OEM $9.00
Samsung Original DDR333 PC-2700 512mb CAS2.5 - OEM $155.00
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP VIA KT333 5P1A3D RAID LAN RETAILSocket A $117.00
AMD Athlon XP 1800+/266 FSB - RETAIL $118.00
Windows XP Home Edition OEM Full Version $88.00 (nonrefundable)
ATI Radeon 8500 64MB DDR AGP RETAIL $160.00
Anti-Static Wrist Strap. $5.00

Subtotal » $751.00

Does he have it right? Is this all necessary (couldn't we cut costs anywhere?)

Please help! Thanks!!!!

Is it necessary? well, that depends on what you want the system for. If he's using it for internet and word processing then it's way too much but for a game machine, it's good. You could get a slightly cheaper video card and cheaper memory but he's selected good parts.

He has Quake but I would not call him a real gamer...He will most likely use it the most for digital photography stuff. I don't want to discourage him but if it is more than he needs, is there anything you could suggest that might help reduce the cost? Or should I bite the bullet and let him go crazy? Its just that I know each additional add on is going to creep up. I know he is going to want or maybe need a new printer. The monitor that we have is good but old. I don't even know if it will work in the new machine. This is too stresful.

Sorry for sounding like such a nut job. What do you think we should do?

Thank you. :)

That system he has put together seems pretty decent to me. I don't think he has really gone overboard on anything. He might save a few dollars on a cheaper mobo and memory, but he wouldn't be saving that much. Video card is a decent choice, considering high end cards (gaming) are around $400 bucks right now and the one he picked will support everything thats out right now very well.

He did ok.

Great little setup, looks well thought out. Very cost effective if you ask me.
