just replaced my laptop's LCD on my own.

did that last year with a tecra 8200, man those toshibas suck...got the LCD used off ebay for like $100, new they wanted $600 and installed it was almost a grand...took a half an hour and worked like new, sold the whole thing for $500 just a month ago.

Probably due to a combination of size, and the fact that all laptops run a direct digital signal (probably quite a bit different than DVI). Laptops still don't have many standardized parts outside of RAM, the HD, and perhaps a miniPCI card (and maybe optical drives within a laptop family). So having a non-standard LCD would just be par for the course.
