just reformat my old pc with windows 98 and now i cant connect to the internet.

Making a once over the spec sheet, I did not see any NIC for the computer -- just a modem. I would assume you have added one of your own. If this is the case, the first thing to do would be to make sure you have the driver installed and go from there.

what? i dont have the drivers anymore and i dont know the model of the network card either since it doesnt say what model it is.

Boot a Linux LiveCD and run 'lspci' and it'll likely tell you what chipset is on the thing.

Well, if the drivers aren't installed, that's why the internet doesn't work. Another alternative would be to...buy another NIC for about $10 or so and stick it in there and load the drivers up.

why buy another card when i have an perfectly working one?

Coz, if you do not know what is it, and you do not have drivers, then it is like you do not have a card.

However if you install Win2000 or WinXP, since they were released later it might have the drivers already in the CD and it would install automatically.

my other 2 pc listed the model of the card on the network card icon. why is this one not listed? are there no other way of detecting the model number? i never though something like this is such a pain.

You don't need to know much to boot a CD and run a single command.

if you run windows update, does it list any NIC drivers in the hardware list?

look over the card thoroughly, are there any identifying marks, letters, symbols, etc anywhere?

Did you reinstall win98 or win98se? If it is win98se, here is a win98se update pack that includes security fixes and more

drivers and may include one for your NIC. http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html There is also a forum at that link that may point you to other places to look for these old driver packs.

The update pack is easily installed and requires little knowledge.

To determine what NIC is in your machine, either remove it and read the numbers/brand name on the chipset, or install a program such as Sissoft Sandra to detect the devices on your machine. Then you will know what driver you need.
