Just Recieved Scythe Katana Cu

Wow this thing is heavy! This cooler was recommended to me and was the only one I could find that would fit my Socket A/ 462 mobo. It also got great reviews. It looks great. Only concern I have atm before I start to install it is the weight. Should I be worried about the stress it will put on my mobo (Asus A7V 266-E)? Has anyone heard of any horror stories of a cooler too heavy for the mobo?

Yeah, how about the thing breaking the entire area around your CPU socket off  and while its falling, taking out every card under it like your video card for instance. In other words, it fvcks you up  You'll *probably* be ok, just dont jolt it around too much.

Yes. Your power supply will be sucked in from the sheer "black hole" factor.

Anyway, you shouldn't have any problems installing it. It's a simple clip-on.

Well I went ahead and installed it. Went pretty well, the socket clips are actually pretty strong. I couldn't install the katana with the heat pipes facing up because of clips on the socket of the mother board were on either side, not top and bottom.

I am getting cpu temp of 48C at idle and so far it has only gone up to 51C. Unfortunately I forgot to check my temps with the old fan. Should I be expecting these kinds of temps with the scythe katana cu on an athlon xp 2100+? I did a search found others with the same cpu had lower temps. When I installed the fan I put a super thin almost transluscent layer of arctic silver 5. I also did not clean the bottom of the heatsink with any isopropyl alchohol, assuming it was as clean and smooth as it was going to get out of the package.

If I had put a thicker layer of arctic silver 5 and cleaned the bottom of the heatsink would I likely be getting cooler temps, or is the cpu as cool as it is going to get with this heatsink/fan?

Hmmm,
Did you put the layer of AS5 all over the CPU or just on the core?
Becuase the only thing that you need the thermal paste to cover on you CPU is the core.
If you put it on the whole chip there could be a chance of you putting too much AS5 on the chip and resulting in the high temps you are getting.

Oh and i think those temps are wayy to high for any chip w/ that cooler on it. Well then again those XP chips do run somewhat hot.

Ya, I only put a VERY small amount on the core. The MB temp is reading 26C, which seems pretty cool.

I wonder if it's worth the hassle of redoing it.

If case temp is the same thing as MB temp its 26C. I am using Asus PC Probe. I also got Speedfan 4.28 and it gives the same readings. Although when my cpu temp gets to 50C in Speedfan a fire icon appears next to the reading which I dont think is a good thing.

Unfortunately I don't know if mb temp = case temp, but if it is, the CPU temp shouldn't be that high. What CPU are you using?

Was there any pre-applied thermal compound on the base of the Katana? Was there a plastic layer you forgot to remove? Did you plug in the fan?

I am using a AMD Athlon XP 2100+ Palomino 266MHz FSB Socket A Processor Model AXP2100BOX. There was no thermal compoind on the base of the heatsink and I removed the plastic. I did not clean the base of the katana after removing the plastic though. Yes the fan is plugged in and spinning at 2400 rpm.

The fins on the heatsink are a tad warmer than other parts inside the computer. If the sensor is not accurate is there any alternative to measuring the temp of the cpu?

I touched the heat pipes at the base near the heatsinks pad and they were about the same temperature. Then I touched the pad of the heatsink that is in contact with the cpu and my pc restart...

The computer... restarted? 😕

Is the CPU seated properly?

Update: Started my pc up this morning and loaded speedfan. Temperature read 38C. Over the next 10 minutes the temperature continued to rise and stopped at about 43C. I loaded a game and a minute later the temperature started to rise again until it hit 46C. I stopped playing after 5 minutes and the temperature went back down to 44C and has been the same for 10 minutes.

Im stumped. Why would the temperature be cooler than yesterday by 4C when I didnt change anything. The Mb temp (case temp??) is 24C which is 2C cooler than yesterday. 44C still seems high for the fan Im using and the MB temp.

IIRC AS5 will "cure" over a short period of time (perhaps a few days) and will perform better than the moment it was first applied.

Ok that makes sense then. Does a cpu temp of 44C and a 25C sound normal with the cpu and fan that Im using? Is there anything else I could do to try to lower the cpu temp?
