First of all it doesn't count as a Darwin award because he has kids. Second it doesn't count because what he did isn't really stupid, just some random unfortunate circumstances.

The last part of what you say is somewhat understandable....I guess it is just a sad random thing. I've always been taught more respect for knives (like holding them point out, or not holding at all if you're not using but plan to use it again soon, etc.) so I have a hard time seeing something like this happening w/o carelessness being at play

As for someone having kids, when has that ever excluded someone from getting a Darwin award???

See? If he hadn't lost all the weight, maybe the knife wouldn't have penetrated far enough to do any real damage...Fatties FTW!

Seriously, that's a fucked up thing. It sounds like the guy was trying to make life better by losing 150 lbs...sometimes, all you can say is "Shit Happens," and not be able to blame any one thing for the accident.

darwin award candidates kill themselves and thus take stupid out of the gene pool by not being able to reproduce. he already had kids, so darwin award not applicable in this case

Maybe if he didn't loose that 150lbs he'd have had some more meat on him and the knife wouldn't have killed him.

How the fuck is the dude stupid?! It's called reflexes! You ever touch a hot stove? Your hand jerks itself away before your brain even registers that it was hot.

Yeah, but then he'd still have to contend with America calling someone like him fat. What's a person to do?

To me it's easy to see how this might have happened.

Imagine you're a righty and you hold the knife in your right hand like one would hold a sword. You reach for something with this hand because you know you can grip that "something" and grip the knife at the same time. But that something turns out to be hot and your hand recoils back towards your body... this backwards motion to your body changes the direction of the knife from away from you to towards you. Try this with something like a pen and you'll see that it can be pretty easy to do.

I understand that they explained what happened, but I still don't see ever being able to stab myself with a knife like that...

Still, :(

I started to think last night how this could have been prevented. Any ideas? One idea was to use a bullet proof vest while using the knife to cut things.

Actually, Knives go through bulletproof vests. They are designed to stop bullets, which are more blunt and spread the impact over an area. A knife just pierces and goes right through.

You know how to prevent stuff life this? Be more careful.

Use blunt-nosed kitchen knives. I can't think of a reason why we need sharp-pointed kitchen knives. When was the last time you needed to thrust into some vegetables or meat?

This is the exact same thing I said last night. Why in the world do we need a pointed, extremely sharp tip like those found on knives.

Are blunt nose knives easy to find?
