Hey guys, I just purchased HL2 at best buy. when I walked in they were rolling it onto the floor and when i was leaving they were taking it back to the back. Wasnt sure what was going on untill I got back and saw the release date wasnt for another 3 days. Best Buy made a mistake i guess. Anyways I am installing it later on tonight.

5 cd set, I believe the collectors edition is dvd, but oh well. No manual with the game, kinda thought that was weird. Either way, I GOT HALF LIFE 2!!!!!! wooohooooo

Yeah, I just bought it as well. Best Buy in Hawthorne just off the Rosecrans exit on the 405 (Los Angeles).

The price on the box was $54.99 but it rung up as $49.49. (5 CD set)

You do know that you can't use it until tuesday right? What you got is the exact same as the pre-load, it still needs to be activated (which cant happen until the 16th)

Yes, that is what I understood to be the case. However, I was there shopping so I thought I would save myself a trip later in the week. Of course just buying it through steam would have saved a trip as well but for various reasons I didn't want to buy it that way.

I have to believe that Vivendi will allow Valve to fire up the Steam authentication, this situation is nuts!

It odd, b/c I dont know what they think they have to gain by not letting Valve fire up the auth servers. Whats the benefit? 😕

LOL! Pulled from another forum:

Call Vugames and leave voicemail until someone figure out these peoples personal phone numbers. (310) 431-4000. Bruce Hack, Chief Executive Officer is a good place to start

Email CNN, Wired and other and other news sites with some clout beyond the gaming world, and tell them that retailers are selling a game that you can't actually play.

Return the box version to the stores and make a big stink about it. Buy hl2 off of steam instead. (good luck with this cause most stores return policies suck ass)

It's pretty funny about the uproar that has commenced today about unlocking a game just 3 days early. I want to play it just as bad as everyone else (well, maybe not everyone), but it is only 3 days. We've waited 6 years, what's 3 days?

I will now sit back and let the diehard fans and fanboys try their best to get this game unlocked 😀.

Word on the street (AKA from a dude behind EB games counter) is that Vivendi is extremely pissed of at Best Buy for releasing HL2 early. They're so pissed off, they're suing Best Buy Corporate and any store which sold the game early. Also, Vivendi isn't releasing any more of there games to be sold at Best Buy (BTW, what else do they have that's worth buying).

Best Buy's response: let's take HL2 off the shelves. don't know if this last part is true though as it's still available on there website and it says i can pick it up at my local BB here in Dayton.

You should be able to pick it up now anywhere. The game is released today.

yea, i know, but i was saying that maybe you couldn't buy it at BB since they're reacting to being sued by Vivendi (the dudes who are distributing the CDs or DVD's of the game)

Sorry to sound ignorant, but what's the big deal if it's released early when you can't activate / play the game? I understand the anti-competitive impact on other stores who don't break contracts, but is there any other reason why valve didn't just let people buy it whenever they darn well please and then activate it when the game was officially released?

If I understand it correctly, only Valve makes the money from Steam orders while Vivendi and Valve share in the profit from retail purchases. If Vivendi allowed Valve to turn on authentication I have a feeling many people would purchase from Steam just to get the game early. Keep in mind that most places didn't have Half-Life2 available for retail purchase. If I'm correct there that would cost Vivendi money.

maybe this is Vivendi's way of making up the money they're losing on sales on steam? (BTW steam == crap).
i don't know ... i'm sure some fancy lawyer within Vivendi has all this worked out.
